usb floppy to use internally

ok, so i can not get to the osx floppy driver. i just cant get into the ftp to download anything to even try. so. what usb drives are compatible. is there an issue of only pc floppy drives, or is mac so cool that it will use everything. because i want to try and install it into the floppy slot of my G3AIO.

i have an AIO, and i want to keep it that way. so no externals for me. thats why i wanted to badly to try the osx floppy drive. but i hope it works. if it does i will let you guys know about it.

peace and love

if you are using a USB card and external drive it should work just fine. how ever i have never tried an actual store bought external floppy drive, i had an IDE drive and put that in a case. that worked fine. i dont know if the others are infact IDE or if they just have a generic floppy controller. i do know that you probly can't use a mac floppy in an external case as they are nothing alike. if you wanted to get tricky you could probly take the guts from the external unit and stuff them inside and make it all work that way. the physical mounting of the drive should work inside unless its got a manual eject button...... not like our macs Smile

I was just at my toy store (http://www.surplusexchange.org) where they have a small pile of USB floppies for Mac by LaCie, Macally or somebody. Anyway, they seem to be using laptop style slim floppies with manual eject. To mount one would need some custom bracketing and maybe a mod to the floppy slot on the case to allow the button to protrude.

BTW: They were selling for $10 each. I bought a "dead" iMac 350 for $5 instead. I got it running in 45 seconds at home and am now installing OS on it... It wouldn't power up, just flash the power LED then shut off. So I removed RAM, powered up/powered down, put RAM back in, it started just fine to blinking folder. Best $5 I've spent in a long while.

If you are using anything newer than 10.1 it wont work anyway, they stopped development IIRC.

Anyway, back on topic. I think you should look for an imation superdisk, sometimes called an LS120 drive, they are IDE and IIRC are also auto-eject, but you might have to take the front off to get it to fit in a mac floppy space, Also, it will give you the functionality of being able to use 120MB superdisks, which is always quite useful Smile
