upgade dvd drive in g3 ibook 600

I have a g3 ibook 600, and i was told that i could get like a dvd-rw or maybe just a cdr-w or something and pop it in my ibook. Does anyone know the process in doing that? Since my drive isnt slot loading currently, could i put a slot loading one in? something tells me that would look a little goofy.
I have lots of experience with hardware, but not really laptop hardware. If someone could give me some ideas that would be awesome, thanks.
