iBook G4 1.0GHz logic board in an iBook G3 700Mhz?

Ive been offered to buy a working logic board for an iBook G4 with a 1.0GHz G4, 256MB ram and ATi 9200 32MB for $40. From another source I can buy a G3 700Mhz with a defective logic board. Can the G4 logic board fit and made working in the G3 machine?

Ive compared pictures and specs of the two logic boards, and while the differences are minimal - there are indeed some - especially connector-wise. Thanks for any feedback!

Follow-up

Ok, Ive been searching around and I found the following comment:

>to migrate to a g4, you will need the logic board, frame, heatsink, fan, dc-in board, lvds
>cable, reed switch/inverter cable, top case, optical drive, ribbon cables for optical and hard
>drive. A new inverter may be needed (unsure).

This means I miss the following parts:
- Frame
- DC-in board
- LVDS cable
- top casing
- optical unit and HDD (easy to get hold of)
- Ribon cable for DVD/HDD
- Possibly new inverter (?)

Is this a go/no-go? What do people think? Smile

And there's no guarantee the implementation of LVDS is the same

iBook G3-> iBook G4

Fortunately, you will be able to reuse your lcd, but you will need (at bare minimum) the following to use the g4 iBook logic board.

frame
heatsink
dc-in board
reed switch/inverter cable
lvds cable
slot loading optical drive (the frame won't accomodate anything else)
top case
bottom case (this is to properly support the slot load optical drive)
microphone (it's a different assembly)
airport antenna (also different)
hard drive and optical drive ribbon cables and brackets
memory - if you want more than 256 mb (iBook g4 uses ddr memory)

Parts that can be reused with the new logic board
lcd (same part will work on the 500 mhz dual usb to the new 1.33 ghz 12")
display plastics
hinge/brace assembly for display assembly
hard drive
inverter
keyboard

You may be able to reuse the battery, but it's doubtful. Your best bet will be to find an iBook G4 with a cracked lcd - it'll be easier to do, and it won't be a hacked cobbled together unit. I make my living tearing down and rebuilding iBooks, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Doing this swap shouldn't be too bad, as you are essentially building a whole new machine, and reusing few parts from your existing iBook. The big issue should be cost (it'll get expensive quick) and getting the proper logic board screws. Also, by migrating to an iBook G4, don't think you're getting away from logic board problems.

Ok, It looks like I'll be loo

Ok, It looks like I'll be looking for a damaged G4 laptop instead. How is the G3 LCD panel fited to the 700MHz compared to todays LCD panels btw? I see a big difference between the previous 1.2GHz 12" and todays 1.33GHz 12"

It seems to me the number one culpit with both the G3 and the G4 is faulty logic boards. If Im to buy this part used, is there any way to tell if the part has a problem? And what exactly gets broken on these boards? (I take it repairs to a faulty logic board are out of the question).

And to lantm: Do you have a webshop where I can shop parts from you if neccessary?

Thanks for all the replies.

iBook LCDs

The internal part number has changed for the lcd's from series to series, however there is no real noticeable difference between the lcd's used on the g3's and the g4's. As far as testing the board, there's no way to do that without hooking it up to the necessary parts to fire it up. Repairing a faulty logic board is something that I really don't have the expertise to do, and from the looks of it is rather complicated, especially with fragile portable computer components.

As far as a webshop, sadly, no I don't run one. I can help you with getting the part numbers for what you need. Shoot me a PM, and I can try to help out.
