power supply on Digital Audio G4

Hi,
I have a Digital Audio 733mHz G4 Mac. The fan in the power supply is very noisy. The computer works fine, but the noise is bothersome. Is there a way to replace the fan (or better yet, oil the fan) rather than replace the whole power supply? Thanks!

Sure there is

Take the p-sup apart and remove the fan. You can probably get a replacement from a local electronics store. I believe it's a standard size. you may have to desolder a couple of wires for the power connectors 'cause the fan is shoe-horned in there.

I've also seen the side fan make noise. That one may be harder to find a replacement at a parts store. Most I've seen for sale are like 1.5x - 2x the width of it but your milage may vary. They had one that was the same physical dimension but was rated for 115VAC not 12VDC. You'll see some eBay listings for that fan and bracket like this one (not my listing - for illustration)...

To discern if it's that fan or the power-supply fan, you can disconnect the above fan's connector from the p-sup's output wire bundle.

Someone else may have more info for ya. Smile

Processor fan instead

Thanks for replying. After further examination, it isn't the power supply fan, but the processor fan (Model 2410ML-04W-B37, 12v, DC 0.16A). Interestingly... when I tip the computer forward (or backward) and rest it onto the lower handle, the noise disappears! Do you think that it might just be out of alignment or something like that? Is the processor fan readily available at an electronics supply store? Thanks!

Fan noise

Hi,

I had the same problem with my DA 533. You can remove the fan and trim the plastic housing where the fan hits it. Worked for me.
