Jill

Well, with the release of the new Titanium macs... this might all seem a little dated, but as a big fan of the customization stuff that is done in Japan by the folks at the Powerbook Army Pages, I'm posting it anyhow...

This obviously does not pertain to the new generation of Powerbooks, but their are a lot of older G3 Powerbooks out their and some of you happy owners might want to tinker with them like I did... but be forewarned... when you do this you most likely blow off your warrenty....

To start with, my custom Mac sports three changes...

  • The Red Painted Lid
  • The Red Glowing Logo
  • And the Red Logo above the screen...

First off, I cannot claim credit for the Red Glowing Logo, that, to my knowledge was first accomplished by Jay and is outline in wonderful detail on the Red Delicious Page. So, I won't go into all of those details again except to say that after the six screws are removed, as Jay shows... the cover of my Powerbook came off without any unusual or loud pops... but, since I take apart a lot of computers on a regular basis... I might just be more accustomed to those odd noises... further, the painting idea was used only after being unable to achieve the level of success I desired with plastics as was done by a gentleman from japan and outlined at his web sight, here, and yes, you can see that I was inspired by these folks...

Once the lid was off I did as Jay outlined and added some red Celophane just as Jay did..., I then took the lid and used standard masking tape to cover the center of the lid with about two layers... masking tape is excellent for this as it is just tacky enough to hold but leaves not glue residue when it is remover...

I cut the edge by slipping an exacto knife into the grove and gently cutting off the excess mask and then took the lid outside and placed it in a sunny spot on a piece of cardboard (to act as a drop cloth) and painted it with a typical bright red spray paint..

learnfromerror

Please note that I learned something that seems obvious in hindsight... place the lid up in the air on something when you paint it... the latch closure needed some significant touch up work that could have been avoided had I been a little more thoughtful...

innerlogored

The little inner Apple Logo that is right above the screen is held in place by a small piece of tape and is very easily removed... this was painted red too, for consistancys sake... although I seriously thought about painting it in the old rainbow format... Once dry it just slips back in and is held in place with the same piece of tape... easy...

redcover

The finished Powerbook Cover is ready to be reinstalled on the Laptop.... the process is simply the reverse of taking it off... it only takes a few minutes of gentle work... if you are using much presuresure... check your alighnmreent...because it should go on quite easily...
