Sider external hard drive
I have a Sider external disk drive that I can run in slot 7 if I remove the disk II control card from the expansion slot 6. I know I used to be able to leave the card in the computer and everything ran fine. Now I can't even leave the card in the slot with the sider cable connection disconnected. The disk drives stop working. Any ideas?

The most common failure on

The most common failure on Sider drives is the power supply in the drive unit itself.  Can you try the controller in slot 5, boot from floppy in 6 and try running the Sider utility software?

I guess I wasn't clear, the Sider is functioning perfectly as long as it is the only drive connected to the Apple IIGS. I did what you suggested and the machine just stops. Nothing boots including the Sider. I can not boot even from the sider in this configuration. There was something in the technical specs that said I needed to tell the sider system that I was planning to move the control card before I did it. I did not do this when I moved the control card to slot 5. However, the machine would not boot from the drive in slot 6. When the Sider card is in the expansion slot, I can not get the IIGS to boot. Even when the cable from the controller to the Sider is disconnected. I haven't been able to figure it out and could really use some help. Phil

You didn't mention it was a

You didn't mention it was a IIgs.  What is your control panel settings for the card slots?  Make sure you have whatever slot the Sider controller card in set to "your card".

Yes, the control panel says my card for slots 6 and 7. When there is nothing in slot 6, the Sider functions perfectly. Then I remove the Sider control card and insert the Disk II control card in slot 6 and it works perfectly. However, when both cards are in slots 6 and 7 the computer will not boot. I have tried it with the startup slot set to both 6 and 7.
