Compaq Lte 5100

Yup I'm back still no success on the sound but I have notice people soing all kinds of crazy things on cpu's. So I got to wandering what could I do with this thing because I'm not to good with computers I was gonna try to get windows ME on the laptop I have 2 hardrives for it the 800mb and the 2.1 GB hardrive it has 40 MB RAM and is currently running windows 95 I got that running through my docking station so I was wondering could it be done could I put Windows ME on this ancient thing or not so I figured Id ask here so can I?

Another thing what PCMCUA cards can it take, im so confused?

Any suggestions on what I can so with it cause I like the thing it really is pretty good for its age so I was jw any suggestions.

Just throw away the Windows M

Just throw away the Windows ME disk. Its is utterly worthless and pure junk.

Now either put a linux on it or if you wanna stick with windows, put Windows 98SE on it. 40 megs of ram for Windows 98SE is adequate. Not super speedy but it will work.

Win ME is horrible horrible trash. It might install fine at first, but in one month, you will have a constaintly crashing computer that you will end up throwing out the window.

Oh yeah, i'm not sure if your laptop can handle Cardbus cards, but just borrow one from a friend and see if it fits in your lappy. If it won't seat all the way, then your lappy is only a pcmcia slot and isn't a cardbus (pc card) slot. Cardbus/pc cards are 32 bit whereas pcmcia are 16bit (sorta like the difference between ISA and PCI slots).

Okaythe Cardbus card didt fit

Okaythe Cardbus card didt fit into the laptop but it did go into the docking station so im a little confused.

I just fromatted the 2nd drive with windows 95 nder fat 32 until I get a good OS for a 2.1 gig hard drive and I really don't like Linux or windows NT and by what u said windows ME sucks but I think I might give it a spin once I get it a cpu tech told me he preferred over windows 2000 becasue he dosent like the NT series and neither do I.

Re: Okaythe Cardbus card didt fit

a cpu tech told me he preferred over windows 2000 becasue he dosent like the NT series and neither do I.

Am I reading that correctly...that a cpu tech preferred ME over the NT series?
NT 4 workstation will run circles around ME on that laptop, use a fraction of the disk space, and probably crash once for every 100 times ME crashes.
I would question the credentials of that CPU Tech.

That aside, I'd recommend sticking with Win95. Or...if you want to be really adventurous, and have a unique, fast and cool operating system, install Windows for Workgroups and Calmira II. Dirol

He said NT is faster but NT i

He said NT is faster but NT is more vunarable to viruses I'm pretty sure the guy knows what his doing he has 20 computers in his house and a back cellar full of CPU stuff he said he uses windows 2003 server edition or something.

But back to the subject any other suggestions what to do with it it's cool and a but a nice little it of money into it and it's pretty good on the net but the 2 hard drives are really small and I'm not sure if it can hold a bigger drive if it can someone let me know thanks in advance.

PS If anyone has parts or something for the 5000 seris let me know cause I might be interested in buying them

BTW, it would not be unuusal

BTW, it would not be unuusal for a company to put a cardbus/pc-card slot in a docking station and only have a pcmcia slot in the actual laptop, espically since your vintage equiptment is around the crossover time period (where companies were changing over to cardbux from pcmcia). Also your docking station might be newer than the laptop. Just as an example, I can use the same docking station for my old dell CPi (366mhz p2) as I can use for my much newer dell c610 (1.2ghz p3).

I've got a LTE5250 sitting in

I've got a LTE5250 sitting in my living room. It's a P120 running Win98 so it's not good for much besides basic internet, running winamp and playing internet radio streams.
I've got a LTE5100 sitting here too. I robbed a 3.2 GB hard drive and 32 mb ram out of it for the 5250. It doesn't have much for parts besides the 800 mb hard drive and a floppy drive. The battery is toast and the screen is the crappy passive matrix style.

I've got an LTE 5380 here. 2

I've got an LTE 5380 here. 2GB, 32MB, 12" XGA, but only 8-bit color... The LTEs are allright, but I wouldn't do much more than Win98SE on one. Mine has an ES1688 PNP audio setup. I dunno if your 5100 has the same, but the specs should be available on the Compaq or HP websites.

So have you seen [url=http://

So have you seen this page that has all the official drivers for an LTE 5100 running Win 95? Wink If you remember that HP bought Compaq and start your search for info from HP, then things go a bit easier. :coolmac: I'd say try Win98 in it, as it is likely to have better PNP support, and have the needed drivers on the CD.
