Band Geeks...

classic_master's post about the Bassoon made me think back to the days when I dated a bassoon player... and made me think about my band years with both fondness and disgust. So the question is posted:

Were you a band geek?

If so, what did/do you play?

If not, how many did you bully/date/hang with/look up to?

Sincerely,

well... now that you mention it...

I've been a trumpet player for a decade (just over half my lifespan) and a bassoonist for half as long. I have always been the überbandgeek(as evidenced by my creating a website for an instument), having been a drum major, playing in the all-state orchestra, and playing with numerous honor groups and civic ensembles. I also have written a couple of short pieces for the bassoon. Music/band gives me something to do outside of my room full of Apples.

Later,
CM

I was a former saxophonist

I used to play alto sax in school for three years. I experimented with the bassoon for part of the last year. While I liked playing the sax, my last band teacher turned me off of playing.

When I started 9th grade, I switched my elective to computers and I've been paying for it ever since. Acute

Never could read the notes

I played the Alto Saxophone too. However, I never could read the notes as fast as I could play the Sax. I could play Blues, And I could play mostly by ear. Man, I was a Sax machine. Alas, I had to stop when I went on a Medication that one of the side effects was dry-mouth. I kept having reeds blow in up in my mouth (It used to splinter in my mouth when the reed got too dry.) But although I can't play it anymore, the only instrument that I will play by choice is the Alto Sax.

I used to play clarinet for a

I used to play clarinet for a couple years. I was never really a band geek, just the usual sort of geek... ::) One of my brother-in-laws plays a mean clarinet. He toured Europe last summer with a multi-state competition orchestra, in which he made second chair to a junior from another state, and he was a sophomore. I seem to recall that he took a final test when he had to learn and play a song from memory in a week or so. He left it until the night before and then started learning it. The next morning he took the test and did fine. He's a smart kid.

Band freaks is more like it...

I knew your kind in high school.

American Pie was close, but left too little to the imagination.

Hell, I went out with a band chick (clarinet), and I still have fond memories of ... but I digress...

The band kids were a different kind of freak altogether.

(sigh... what memories...)

Awwww maaaan!

If I only had a tuba... or even a Sousaphone... I would be so there.

Well, I'll be there anyway. I have to at least take my wife so that I can explain the $2000 expenditure... Wink

If anyone is going to either the Ft. Worth or Dallas concerts, lemme know.

Cotton Bowl!

I'm a band geek... ask -Wallstreet-.

2nd chair euphonium in my school's top audition ensemble. I play marching baritone in the marching band. This year our marching band is going to the Cotton Bowl! If anyone cares, we'll be on Fox at 10:00 AM CST. My band will be towards the middle, with dark and light blue and white uniforms. Visit this link to see if you can guess which band I'm in. Acute

I play the Bb soprano Clarine

I play the Bb soprano Clarinet. Well, it gives me something to do when I'm not dreaming of upgrading my old PB190 to a G3 Kanga, or using said 190. Of course, I'm not going to state the obvious fact that clarinets are the best part of the band.

Thanks,
CSC

Well, I'm a professional oboi

Well, I'm a professional oboist by training. Okay, so I work for a magazine instead, but I did train as an oboist, and served my time as both a music teacher, and a solist Smile

So yeah, I guess I'm a band geek Smile

I Hung Out With The Drum Corps...

Most of my friends were drummers, plus a couple of orchestra friends (strings). I was in a rock band after high school with most of these people... Tempystt (talk about an early 1980's name!), where I did vocals and keyboard/bass (I used to sound like Jeff Lynne of ELO). Ah, those halcyon days of wasted youth...
