Hi all. Whenever I try to open a file that is a smi type file, it opens, tries to run, and then gives me an error message of type -39. Can anyone help me? I would REALLY appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

I don't know what to do. It just tells me an error code, but I know the file is good because it is directly from Apple. I don't get what I'm supposed to do. I now know the code, but how to fix it? I would GREATLY appreciate an answer. Thanks (once again) in advance.

Drop the file onto Disk Copy. BTW, what's the file and on which Mac/OS?

The error code means:
-39 eofErr End of file; no additional data in the format
so this is most likely a broken file. Have you dowloaded the file on a Windows PC? this may break some files esp. programs (a .smi file is a self mounting disk image). It should be possible to download a bin-hex'ed version from Apple and then transfer the .hqx file to the Mac, expand it with StuffIt on the Mac and then it should work.
Files on the Macintosh have two parts, a data fork and a resource fork. A Windows PC can only see the data fork and throws away the resource fork which contains much crucial information.
The System 7.5.3 files were downloaded in .bin format and converted using Aladdin StuffIt Expander to 1 .smi file and 18 .part files. Then the files were transferred to a mac cc1 using MacDrive 7. (I tried hfs util- couldn't get rsxrt150 the damnable protection in XP to grant access to drive a:- go figure...) MacDrive saved the smi and part files to the mac. On execution of the smi file, got return type -39.
Should I have used StuffIt from the mac side? I doubt that rsxrt150 is viable in the xp enviornment- at least i don't know where the switches are to allow...
Where can I get a good StuffIt that'll do the System 7.5.3 StuffIt format that was used? How would I install it?
if downloading anything on a PC and then transferring to a Mac, be sure to only work with files that do not have a resource fork on the PC end (ie, .bin, .hqx)... if you do anything with other mac file types, the PC won't recognize the resource half of the files. You'll need to get the bin/hqx files onto the mac, and THEN extract them.
