Hmmm...

This dosn't sound good, have you tried clicking the finder icon in the dock to relaunch it, or hit Command-Option-Escape click finder and hit relaunch

when i click the finder icon

when i click the finder icon it says finder not running and when i hit the apple in the upper left corner, there is no finder. my hard drive isn't named and my hubby thinks this may be the problem. also, when i close all of my applications, there is not toolbar on my desktop, only the dock. )c:

Terminal

If you can get to the Terminal, you should be able to rename the HD, but I am not sure how, anyone?

This sounds like a very weird problem with a (probably corrupt) finder. Perhaps reinstalling OS X is the best solution.
