Dumb question- OSX Trash

Okay, this is a dumb question but I just can't figure it out. How can you tell the quantity (in KB, MB, etc) of the files in the trash icon in OSX? I've clicked all over the place and there doesn't seem to be a basic properties option.....

Yeah, but have you ever noticed how long it takes to get that info? It takes like 10 minutes to find a couple of KB

yea, don't use the trash can

yea, don't use the trash can to store things. You wouldn't store a loaf of bread in your kitchen trash would you?

That's a good point. I'll tell my customer that.
Thanks.

Not so dumb

Okay, I'm not so dumb after all. OSX doesn't actually allow you to check the total file size of stuff in the trash, although you could check the files individually. Interesting. One of those "oh by the way, this no longer works the way it used to" things in OSX like Sherlock.

When I last had a Mac os X capable machine I was sure it was possible...

Can't you just ctrl left click (or right click if using a non apple mouse) on the trash icon in the dock and select get info?

Nah, only option is "Empty Trash". I'm trying on another box, selecting Get Info from File menu. But it's just giving me "Calculating size", never actually posts the size. And there's not that much in there.

Aha!

I figured out how to figure out how much is in the trash.

1. put something in the trash
2. Open Terminal. It'll automatically be in your home directory.
3. type du -s .Trash and hit enter

volia (the number is Kilobytes)
