I might be interested in the

I might be interested in the iMac however what I am REALLY interested in is the Apple Pro Keyboard. You can ship the iMac from LA to Phoenix for $13 FedEx. I paid that for my fiance's Ruby iMac DV+ I got her for X-mas. I can offer you $40 right now or if you still have it I get paid on the 18th I might be able to shell out a bit more. Also if you want to part with the keyboard let me know about that. I also have alot to trade and I MIGHT be able to get my hands on a G3 All In One if you haven't found one yet.

Take Care,
Danny

FEDEX won't ship computers wi

FEDEX won't ship computers without their original boxes. Sure you can lie about the contents but if you need to make a claim because it was damaged in shipment...than you have a problem.

This past month I tried to ship a CC and was turned down. I have been packing stuff for the shipping for a loooong time and consider myself a profession at it. FEDEX didn't care and the woman even showed me in writing about the policy.

Interesting, I've never shipp

Interesting, I've never shipped anything FedEx before only been on the recieving end. The iMac I got shipped FedEx was not in it's original box but it was packed in that foam packing that takes the shape of the item(the good stuff) and it was purchased from a computer sales company and they have an account with FedEx so maybe that's why they got away with it. Anyway UPS is $19 and USPS is $18. Thanks for the info about FedEx.

I bet if you have a FedEx-Kinko's (or whatever FedEx named them when they bought Kinko's) pack and ship it, there won't be a problem.

FedEx and original boxes

FEDEX won't ship computers without their original boxes...

I've shipped many computers by FedEx ground in plain boxes and only had one problem. They don't ask about the contents and I don't tell them. The FedEx rates are lower than anyone else, and the old Macs I sell are rarely worth more than $50.

The one problem was a shipment to NYC. FedEx could not find the address and eventually returned the package to me. Inside the computer was fine but the keyboard had been crushed. I got another keyboard, reboxed it, and sent it by Parcel Post (after the buyer paid all costs).

I'll continue to use FedEx but not to destinations in NYC. Sad

True, but not a big deal for old/low-end stuff

Fedex indeed won't ship computers without their original boxes. However, they do have a special box designed for laptops. I don't know if they make you pay for the box, but if you use it, they will ship a notebook computer in that.

But generally, yes, if you ship a computer in a non-original box via Fedex, they won't pay out an insurance claim if you need to make one.

I would estimate I've shipped well over 25 computers - including at least 4 Color Classics, and a Quadra 950 - with Fedex Ground, and they've all arrived at their destination undamaged.

If a future computer gets damaged and I have to eat the cost because Fedex won't pay my insurance claim, I won't really care: in the last year alone I've saved so much $$$ using Fedex instead of UPS or USPS, I'll still come out ahead overall (as long as the damaged computer is worth about $150 or less).

Finally, I note that if you get a Fedex account and generate your own shipping labels online (great time saver, by the way), the system doesn't even ask you what the contents of the package is.

I was going to quote the other gentlemen that said FEDEX will ship and doesn't ask about the computer and original box issue. Thanks for taking the time to back me up. Sure we can all lie and get around things. More power to you if you want to take the chance on eating a sale for an insurance claim, but not me. I need every penny I can get.

online shipping labels

That's what I do. But I'm not a fan of the multi-step FedEx online shipping label web app. I'll use the USPS Priority Mail online shipping label if the costs are anywhere close (light weight packages) because the USPS web form is so much easier. Unfortunately, USPS says the form is obsolete and they will remove it some day.

Here's a hint if you do online shipping forms: enable pop-up windows. If they are disabled, you can get to a state where the form wants to ask you a question to proceed and you never see the pop-up.

Whoa - which USPS label are you talking about? I use the online postage one, where the final step is a java app from which you pay and print the label. Are they taking that one down? I hope not - I just discovered it and it's so convenient!

As for USPS vs. Fedex - and vs. UPS, for that matter - I find that anything over about 4 lbs. is much cheaper via Fedex, making it worth the trouble of the multi-step process - and at least most of the Fedex steps are all on the same web page, even if you have to wait for it to refresh portions based on your pull-down menu choices.

Here's a hint if you do online shipping forms: enable pop-up windows. If they are disabled, you can get to a state where the form wants to ask you a question to proceed and you never see the pop-up.

Tell me about it. Smile The first time I tried, I got very frustrated in Safari and Camino. Finally I tried it in IE, saw the pop-ups, and thought, "D'oh!"

FYI Camino's really nice for this because Angel it loads the Fedex site faster than Safari, and (b) you can keep popups off in general but set a permanent preference in Camino to allow them for specific domains. Much easier than remembering to toggle the "block popups" preference on and off every time in Safari.

I use this USPS priority mail label with iCab and Mozilla on OS9. It just makes the label, I still have to pay at the post office. I don't think I can use the Java version.
