eMac internal video question

Hi there--
I'm new here, so sorry if I've missed old posts relating to this subject. A quick google didn't turn up any. Does anyone know the pinouts of the internal video on the eMac? I'd like to use the internal video to drive a VGA display, so that with the common OF "hack" I could use eMac guts to drive two stand-alone VGA monitors. Is this at all possible? Are there any components that can be changed out to allow this?

Thanks!

P.S. I'm looking at the eMac as candidate guts for a Color Classic "Taco", if you're wondering why I'd want to do this (besides the fact that eMacs are cheap).

eMac internal video question

why?, is your internal monitor stuffed?, if you look at my image gallery you will see my gutted emac 700 etc.
As far as I am aware the internal analogue video board and power tranformers are there to drive the monitor directly. The plug that connects the digital carrier board and the analogue video board has power one way and the video signal back the other. I have been looking for the power connectors, so I can hack an ATX power supply and drop all the bulky video and power board and make an headless emac.

Justin

he said he was wanting to use it for a Taco mod ... (i.e. stuff the guts into a Colour Classic)

Any luck???

Hi Justin,

I'm trying to do the same. All I have for now is the motherboard, down converter, VGA display adapter, 2x80gig Hard drives, DVD-rom and a DVD-R burner. All I need is the power supply to run it. Or at least the pinouts to make my own. So if you've had any luck could you let me know. If the same happens my end I'll let you know too. Thanks.

Brutus.

eMac and ATX power supply

I have an eMac 700 Mhz logic board from a CRT-dead unit, and I know it can be connected to an ATX Power supply directly from the Down converter Board connector.

The only thing I need is the info of the pinout voltage in the Down Coverter Board connector to power it up, and as you have a working eMac, it would be great if you could measure it, so we could create a Headless eMac.

I have an idea to connect a Monitor through the internal connector. See this page --> http://www.ct-scan.com/iMacATX/ to find video pinouts on the motherboard connectors of an iMac (I think this info is in the japanese link of this page). I think this connector is the same as the eMac, because it has the same pins and its in the same place (more or less) of the motherboard.

Contact me for whatever you do...
Please, I've been looking for this info all over the 'net and I can't find it :cry:. If you do it, I'll invite you to some beers...

If one of you with an eMac motherboard would be so kind as to post an exact measurement of the dimensions, it would be much appreciated. I had done a guestimate based on comparing the proportions in take-apart pictures, and come to the conclusion that it was too big for a Color Classic. However, that guess could certainly be inaccurate, and a measurement would help the mulititudes who, in the near future, will want to be hacking these affordable computers into other things.

P.S. Beggars can't be choosers, but metric please Wink

eMac Logic Board dimensions

Hi, I have an eMac logic board right here and it's shape is a little weird. It's measures are in this pic: IMAGE(http://www.jmcastillo.net/emac_mobo.jpg)

I'm planning a good mac mod with this logic board, but I need the Down Converter Board connector pinout voltage info to make it work. I can't measure it for myself because I only have the logic board, not the analog module.
The connector is at the left of the processor (in this pic, where the 45 mm measure), and it has 20 pins.

If someone could provide this pinout information, we all would be a step closer to a great Mac Hack.

Thanks! That picture is *supe

Thanks! That picture is *super* helpful. As we can see, a total length of 292mm for the long side- too long for a Color Classic (~260mm long). Width fits nicely though.

Thanks again for taking the trouble to post the pic. Wish I had an eMac to help with the pinouts.

Re: Thanks! That picture is *supe

Sorry if this is a dumb thing to ask, but I'm not in front of my color classic, nor is my conception of metric any good. However, I did at first say I was looking to do this for a C.C. Taco, i.e. one that has had the CRT replaced by an LCD panel. Where are you saying is roughly 260mm? I have a feeling you're thinking the bottom of the C.C., not of putting the board vertically (or diagonally) in the case.

Quadra G4 Project

I'm planning a great mod with the eMac logic board of the pic in the previous post and a Quadra 610 case or a PowerMac 7300 (still undecided) I have lying around.

It would be a 21st century Quadra 610, with the following specs:
- 700 Mhz G4 processor & 100 Mhz FSB (with possible later overclocking up to 933 Mhz & 133 Mhz FSB).
- 2 HDs, 40 Gb-7200 rpm (System) and 250 Gb-7200 rpm (Data).
- DVD-Recorder Pioneer DVR-117.
- 1 Gb PC133 SDRAM.

The only thing that stops me from doing this great Mod is the voltage pinout of the Down Converter Board connector, which is where the ATX PSU connects to the eMac logic board. This info is very easy to get if you have a WORKING eMac, because the only thing you have to do is to point the Red connector of your multimeter to each pin (see pic: IMAGE(http://www.jmcastillo.net/IMG_0003.jpg)) while the black connector points to any screw of the computer.

I would be grateful if anyone could post this information (have you heard about PayPal??? I have...) Please help me with this project.

Anyone???

You are correct, sir. My apologies. The bottom is roughly 260mm long. It should fit top to bottom, though it might be tight.

I think it has been hard to get exact voltage readings for some of the pins. This is because the voltage fluctuates so much that the mulitmeter is unable to lock onto a signal...

I think too that this is one

I think too that this is one of the reasons why this information is still not available, but if this information has been possible to get on a similar connector for an iMac, I don't believe that a "media of measurement" for the eMac connector is still unavailable.

I believe that if it were possible just to see which are the pins of GROUND, +3.3 V, +5 V and +12 V current, it would be possible to power up the eMac logic board.

These lines are just the necesary to power an iMac logic board, and this info is just the one I need, because I don't care of all the other voltages (at least if I see the eMac boots and is stable Smile ).

As a guideline, see this pic:
IMAGE(http://www.jmcastillo.net/ATX.png)

and the following table of connections:

ATX Pins iMac Pins
3,5,7,13,15,16,17 <---> 3,5,8,10,11,13,22
1,2,11 <---> 1,12,14,16,18
4,6,19,20 <---> 4,6,24
10 <---> 2,20,23
8,12,18 No Connect 7,9,15,17,19,21

I hope that someone with an eMac sees this post and gives us this information...

Pwned!

Look here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=1269603#post1269603

Mine is second generation eMac but I guess the others are more or less similar.
If this generates enough interest, I'll put details on a webpage.

Unfortunately downconverter provides 2.5V so little chance to skip it unless you want to make switchable or linear regulator yourself - no big deal but defeats the purpose...

Don't count on it!

Careful - don't count on the pinouts to be the same; you'll likely fry your motherboard (and possibly your monitor) if things are connected wrong.
