Power Hack

Okay, I have a 15" Studio LCD with no power adapter, and I have a 45 watt clamshell iBook power adapter with no clamshell to plug it into. Is there any way that I can hack the power adapter so it will work with the display? The power requirements for the display and the power output for the adapter seem to be pretty close to each other. Can anyone give me some directions or advice? Thanks in advance.

I know that the iBook adapter

I know that the iBook adapter is 45 watts, 24 volts @ 1.875 amps. I've seen different specs on the wattages on the display adapters, ranging from 30 to 45 watts, but the voltage and current is also 24 volts @ 1.875 amps.

24 volts at 1.875 amps is 45

24 volts at 1.875 amps is 45 watts, so I think it should work.

So they're virtually the same

So they're virtually the same power adapters? All I have to do is change out the tip on the iBook adapter?

save that iBook plug!

Those things are damn near impossible to find by themselves, so I'd strongly suggest cutting the wire nearish to the brick and saving that wire+plug assembly. Generic wire as a replacement is cheap enough.

Heck, I'll even offer up some dough for it if it's usable and you save it with most of its cable.

Actually, the original tip is

Actually, the original tip is long gone. This one, I lovingly call FrankenAdapter, because it is just the aluminum casing without the plastic around it. A couple of years ago, it stopped working, so my dad and I tore it apart trying to find the problem. It happened to be a broken cable right up next to the tip, so the tip was pretty much unsalvageable. We clipped the cable and replaced the tip with a 1/8" stereo headphone replacement tip from RadioShack (which the original tip is, just with a shield around it), and it would still work if I had my clamshell around. Now, it's just sitting there collecting dust. If I still had the original tip, I would give it to you.

Okay, next question. Does an

Okay, next question. Does anyone know what the polarity is on the display? My dad has a meter that I can use to find the polarity on the adapter, and he suggested that the positive pole has to be on the inside of the tip on the display, because it could ground out if it was on the outside. Does anyone know for sure?

Daniel...

... everything (almost) is possible I thought as well and replaced my 15" Studio Display charger (a heavy brick) with a little altered "Powerbook Duo" charger. It delivers enough current to do the work. Anyway I had to fit another coupling to it, which you might find at radio shack or elsewhere (I bought it easily in Europe, we have a lot of hardware stores here). And: The interior is POSITIVE, the exterior negative. Good luck!
(You will get two pictures to your email account, couldnt post them here without programming wizarding)

Thank you all so much for all

Thank you all so much for all of your help! I wen to RadioShack this morning and picked up a tip for the power adapter, and it works! Now, I'm just waiting for my Radeon 9200 to get here, so I will have dual displays set up on my B&W. Thanks again!
