Semi-dead iPod.

I got a sorta dead iPod (10GB second gen) for free.

It was dropped in water.

It does turn on, the screen is missing a few lines. The drive comes on and doesn't sound dead. (no head crashing)
It gets to the Apple logo stays there. I have googled for info, and have tried the full restart, forced firewire, and diag mode - none work aside from restarting and that does nothing but take me back to the apple logo.

Anyone think of something else to try before I simply give up and take it in for service?

It does charge when connected to the firewire port and it shows up in ASP, but it does not mount or show up in the iPod util.

Restore

Have you tried doing a restore from the iPod installer?

Well it might be a little lat

Well it might be a little late since you powered it up without doing the normal procedure for waterlogged electtonics.

Water byitself normally won't damage electrnoic items at all (even laptops) if the item is powered off when it is doused. The problem occurs when the water is dirty (full of minerals) and the item was on when it was dropped in the water. The minerals have a tendency to make the water conductive hence causing lots of little short circuits on the device that was dropped.

Now what you should do is to completely (and I mean completely) disasemble the item in question to its barest core possible and then use something like a hair dryer/air compressor to dry it out as much as possible. Then once that is done, let it sit at least overnight (some people will leave a laptop out for a week with no battery or power) and then put it back together and test.

Quite often that is enough to bring back to life a lot of water doused electronics.

So compeletely tear down that ipod and try cleaning it and drying it. Sometimes also it helpss to douse the parts with rubbing alchol to clean it out too.

...

Like I said, it was given to me.

And it has been dry for sometime now. (months) I'm not sure if it was turned on right after the dip, as it was not mine at the time.

(iPod software does not see it, so can't restore anything)

Hmmm...

ummm... if it were turned on right after it probably messed a few things up and could have done permanant damage to the ipods processor, power supply, or other chips

I would still completely disa

I would still completely disassemble it and clean it out using rubbing alcohol and maybe some electronics cleaner. Remember, the water may not have an easy way of evaporating completely and completely stripping it down/cleaning it/drying it/reassembling it might just do the trick.

It sounds like a hardware problem, not a software problem.
