Rev. A iMac 233 internal video port

I have an iMac Rev. A that may have a dead (or at least unreliable) analog board. I understand that despite what Apple says it possible to plug an Apple monitor into the internal video port.

Does anyone know what will work?

Yeah, standard DB15 apple video connector. I use a DB15 to HD15 adapter in my ATX iMac.

It may work...

... but it may not. I've had machines go both ways; some that would continue to work with an external monitor when the analog board was gone and others that wouldn't. I wonder if the ones that wouldn't had something other than analog board problems though; maybe power supply.

Either way, if the iMac can't use the internal monitor, keeping it is a pain because you end up with a monitor alongside the iMac. There are plenty of instruction pages out there that will help you stick your iMac's logic board into any manner of case using a standard ATX power supply. All it takes is a little time, a little money, and some patience.

Thanks for your comments. I

Thanks for your comments. I ended up deciding that it wasn't worth it to try to keep the iMac working. I have an 8500 with a G3 upgrade, so it didn't seem necessary to recase the logic board (and I suppose it could also be bad). I removed the new hard disk, extra 256MB RAM and video RAM I had put in and recycled the rest.

that's a shame...

the unused parts could have had a renewed life to others. From the CRT to the mobo to the case itself. You may have even benn able to sell it off for $30-$40 bucks if you had found someone in need of the parts you had on hand.
