Using POP with gmail

I asked somebody to get me a gmail account simply because it was POP enabled, but no matter what I do, even after following the gmail instructions, I cannot seem to send mail without using the browser interface. I can recieve the mail in my inbox, but I can't send it. I have tried with entourage 2004, Thunderbird, and mail; all with the same results. Is is possible that you are only supposed to be able to recieve mail, even though gmail provides a smpt server?

What's your network setup?

What's your network setup?

If you're behind a firewall/router, the NAT or port blocking may be preventing you from connecting to the SMTP server.

Cheers,

No i can send gmail as well using the provided smtp server. I just noted that u have to set up SSL and login for the smtp server.

re: Using POP with gmail

I was following the gmail instructions too, for an additional account I set up and couldn't get it to work until I read to the end... I hadn't activated POP access from the gmail web page (click on settings... top right of screen once you're logged in).

Then I further ad trouble with the smtp settings in Mail. The SMTP wouldn't authenticate and I didn't have the option to change the port. My solution was to temporarily set it up to use my cox smtp server, then change it to the gmail server with correct port afterwards.

You need to change your the a

You need to change your the address for your outgoing mail server to
whatever the smtp address is to your server.  Gmail only allows you to
connect to its server to receive email and not send, so you need to
send through whatever server you use, i.e. - smtp.aaahawk.net.  This is
common for most web based email clients that provide pop3 access.

see this page

http://gmail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13275

you setup using smtp.gmail.com
and then need to go to advanced and set to ssl and authenticate

all the free POP3 services i have used included this, eg Yahoo

Gmail's SMTP server is flaky

I use Gmail and for a long time *tried* to use their SMTP server. It was extremely flaky, and it seemed for days straight sometimes it simply would not work. I finally gave up on that and used my ISP's SMTP server. I am really unsatisfied with gmail in that respect.

Strange. I've been on gmail almost since day one and from the moment they offered smtp, it has been working fine for me. Of course, there have been times when gmail (and google) were unavailable, mostly because of DNS-poisoning.

Are you certain it is not your provider that has occasional hickups? A lot of providers over here in Europe tend to mess with your connection if you use external smtp's. Some even block ports...
