Mac COlor Classic and external CD_ROM

I've recently purchased a Color Classic On Ebay. I would like to add an external CD-ROM and would welcome advise from others as to the best drive options and technical considerations. Help much appreciated.

CD for CC

Hey,

It's a pretty simple procedure. Any older external Apple CD drive will work. What you need to do is find a driver if the OS is older than 7.6. Try the Mac Driver Museum.

CD for CC too!

Hi,

Just purchased a CC myself from Ebay... also getting an Apple external SCSI CD drive too. I presume that my CC would recognise it straight away?

Not so fast . . .

Hey,

It will if the OS has a CD driver installed. The hardware aspect isn't an issue as there is a SCSI bus to connect the CD and the CC. But whether the CD will be plug and play is determined by the resident OS. The stock CC can use 7.1 to 7.6.1. 7.6.1 has a CD driver as part of the install so getting a CD to work with it would be simple. But if you have 7.1 on the CC you'll need to find the drivers. I can't remember if 7.5.x has CD software as part of the install and which variant might have it. The driver and other software for the CD is readily available and connecting the CD-ROM is pretty easy.

Wait A Minute

I installed os 7.5.3 on a macintosh classic and it reconised my external cd-rom drive.
wouldn't it also install the driver on the external cd-rom on os 7.5.3 install for color classic?

Yes

Hey,

If 7.5.3 contains CD software then, yes, it will install it and your external CD-ROM will be recognized. Was I vague about that?

Your best bet would be to get

Your best bet would be to get an Apple brand CD drive. While others may work, many require a third party driver. Also you can boot off the Apple CD drive but won't be able to with most other brands,
