Ethernet for SE/30

I do not have an Ethernet card for an SE/30, but I do have an AsanteTalk bridge for sale. This little box is a Localtalk to Ethernet bridge that allows older Macs to connect to Ethernet networks via the printer port.

It looks like this:

You can get details about this device from here:

What is it that you want to do?

What is it that you want to do with your SE/30? If all you want to do is share files, the AsanteTalk device will be ideal and is very simple to setup. If you want to get your SE/30 on the Internet, I would strongly suggest that you just download IPNetRouter and connect your SE/30 to the Internet via the SE's serial port.

In light of the fact that the SE/30 is a slow 68030 based machine and is not very well suited for most Internet applications, a fast ethernet connection is probably not necessary. Unless, of course, you intend to use your SE/30 in some server based capacity, I really wouldn't put too much effort or expense into adding Ethernet to the SE/30.

For basic email use, a serial port connection will be more than sufficient. The SE/30, as you may imagine, is not at all suited to tasks like web-surfing. The small black & white display, the slow 68030 processor, and the unavailablity of modern browsers for the 68K machines makes all but simple text-only surfing possible on the SE/30.

The SE/30 does, however, make a great platform for Telnet use. If you're seeking to use your SE/30 as a Telnet terminal, then a serial port Internet connection will be just fine.

Basically, unless your intending to use your SE/30 to serve up a website or something similar, there's really no justification for requiring an ethernet internet connection on the SE/30. I would also add that, although, the SE/30 is perfectly capable of serving up websites, it is not exactly the optimum system for such a task.

Hope this helps.

What cards?

What cards? I don't have any ethernet cards that will work in an SE/30. I have a bunch of Asante PDS Ethernet NICs and a couple of Asante Comm Slot Ethernet NICs. I think I have one Farallon Etherwave PDS NIC as well. Getting an Ethernet card for the SE/30 may prove to be difficult; there aren't many available and the people that do have them generally aren't willing to part with them.

The AsanteTalk bridge does not support auto-negotiation, so it may or may not work with your LinkSys 10/100 router. Although, if you had another Mac with a serial port you could run IPNetRouter and just use a serial cable to connect your SE/30 to the Internet. Of course, this would mean that you would have to leave your other Mac powered up while your webserver was running.

Basically, if you're going to keep another Mac powered up 24/7 just so you can run IPNetRouter, you may as well just run your website from the more capable Macintosh. Alternatively, you could look into possibly splitting your web server over two or more machines in order to compensate for the slowness of LocalTalk. Have you looked into any multihoming options for your Mac?

Asante SE/30 ethernet cards for $10

I have them for $10 plus shipping from Florida. They are new in box, never used. They also work with the Mac IIsi.

These work perfectly with 10BaseT equipment. Some brands of 10/100 equipment do not sync up with the Asante cards properly. The standard solution is to use a 10BaseT hub in series where you have the problem.
