SCSI voodoo

Hey everyone.

I'm trying to get a newish 340mb Connor SCSI drive to work in my CC.

It's in place, and spins up, but it's not recognised by anything (patched HD SC Setup, SCSI Director). MicroNet Utility informs me that the SCSI bus is in the wrong phase, then hangs trying to "reset" it.

I (accidentally) tried the drive with no jumpers in place, and jumpered as ID 5 or something, no dice.

Is there some SCSI voodoo I need to do before this'll work?

You might be SOL

I seem to recall that Connor drives are crap to begin with, and that they don't play well with Macs. I could be mis-remembering, but it sure rings a bell.

Termination....

Closer examination shows it's not got termination resistors.

I accidentally snapped one of the spair ones I had to put in it.

Newish?

Is there such a beast as a near-new 340MB hard drive?:)

Know this: SCSI is voodoo. It will eat your brain. Especially with third-party drives on a Mac.

Have you googled for the drive's jumper settings? I owned a Connor 340 - one of the half-height models - and remember having a heck of a time getting it to work on the Mac. It finally did, through, once I got the jumper settings. There was still a lot of trial and error though.

Will SCSI probe see it? If so, well...that's at least a start.

"new" "ish"

Well, "new" "ish" (I pulled it from a Japanese 386...)

I think the problem (at the moment) is the lack of termination....

Connor drives

I used to have a 1 GB Connor drive in my first CC - worked quite fine. Although I remember I could not format it with Mac OS tools had to find some utility or do the resource hack on Apple one to recognise all drives (depends of course on the Mac OS version you are using).

The Connor drives seem to be particularly sensitive about termination so you absolutely have to have properly terminated bus. There is nothing complicated about SCSI (no voodoo) - it just work differently from IDE and is more complicated because it is more flexible. Basically you can think of SCSI as a network (there is similarity to coaxial ethernet) - where last devices in a chain have to be terminated to prevent signal bouncing. If you have a simple chain (single SCSI HDD in CC) then your drive has to be properly terminated (CC's SCSI adapter will terminate the other end).
