Yeah, basicly there is no way

Yeah, basicly there is no way to do this. You can make a display have a smaller resolution by making 4 or more pixles seem like one, but there is no way to have half a pixle. Wink CRT's are capable of doing this since the size of a pixle on the screen changes with each resolution.

Hinges?

I doubt that Apple would even include hinges. Just straight bolt the screen on and bolt the 'book to your lap/desk.

"Virtual Desktop" was . . .

. . . what they used to call scrolling around a reasonably sized desktop thru the periscope of an SE :ebc: . . . or the tiny monitors standard for NuBus/PDS Macs of all but higher end DTP and CAD shops of that pixel-impoverished era, IIRC.

If you NEED a higher resolution in order to run a specific program (like when Adobe decided that my 2300c's 640x480 LCD didn't push enough pixels to bother supporting somewhere around Illustrator 6.0) such a hack can be a major advantage ofr using a PB in the field.

IIRC, it was usually coupled with a Video card (add'l VRAM), but I think there might have been some software hacks.

I also think this discussion took place over in MacAch . . . :? . . . not sure though . . . IIRC they might have been talking about interpolated displays of higher resolutions on dinky LCDs for the same purposes mentioned above.

Sorry I can't dig any more up out of the haze . . .

p.s. you aren't talking about getting that res on an external monitor are you?
