Over-use single game crashing??

I have an XFX KT400ANB with an athlon 1800XP along with 512 mb ram, ati 64mb Radeon 9000 agp and 120gb seagate running windows XP. i have played many many games on this machine and none of which have ever crashed due to working the system too hard. how ever i have one game that seems to do it only when a lot is happening in the game. dont know if youve ever heard of Total Annihilation? well needless to say it seems to crash less when i can keep the system colder. but its well well within limits of the system... i got fans galore on this thing. alot of flow, not just noise like some systems Smile it doesnt seem to get very warm at all. only reason i think its heat related is because the game will do the same thing on my laptop with similar specs unless its force cooled with a window fan under it! but that machine doesnt run it as fast as my desktop does. it doesnt crash the whole computer, just has an error and stops the game in its tracks, then acts like nothing was even running in the first place. do you think getting a higher spec machine will help this? i also know the game is extremly out dated but this is a modded version meant for XP with lots of little goodies as well. to put it bluntly, this new version of the game is about 15 times better and more capable then the original. also when it stops, its not even really slowing the machine down. seems fine then snap, it just goes. sorry im so jumpy with this post, im just writing things as they come to mind. only reason i even care to fix this is because its an awsome game, i could play it for hours, awsome graphics (for 1996) and the sound effects and gameplay are awsome too. not to mention its up to 8 players multiplayer Smile the game doesnt get crazy till you have atleast 4 players. funny thing is it crashes less in m-player mode then single player mode. i hope someone knows somthing about this problem or may have had instances like it in the past. thanks for reading my crazy post!

you said it's modded right?

that might be the problem. It seems that the game does not quite like the setup. Maybe there is a bug in the Mod, that is crashing the system. Most likely, a memory leak.

Considering the game was orig

Considering the game was originally for Windows 95, it could even be the core game itself that's crapping out on XP.

You could try the Bochs emulator with Win95 installed on a disk image. Emulation will slow you down, but then again, the original requirements for TA weren't too high (haven't checked...does it even need Windows, or will it run from dos, in which case you could even try it with FreeDOS and VMWare player)

well the original reqirements

well the original reqirements are very low, how ever the game got pretty crazy with the limits so im sure its pegging the core right out like you said, the original limits were 200 units and some other things i cant remember, the max now is 5000, which i never see more than 750-900 before it dies anyways.. hahaha.... so its got its own problems but if i slow the game down by changing the settings it will play right till the end of the game most of the time. ive gotten through a few extremely hard games as long as i dont really tax the game hard. if i select 5 or more really large ships to attack one spot it will hang if its trying to go fast.. i guess when it comes down to it, it really is the software, oh well right? thanks for helping out... rumor has it they were going to come out with a TA 2 but i havnt seen anything about it.....

win95 compatibility

well, i also think it's due to compatibility issues with xp. i have got "star trek - birth of the federation". great game, the graphics are a bit crappy but the game makes it up with hours, days and months of fun in gameplay. it's nearly as addictive as "colonization" way back on the 386's.

however, on my win98 machine it ran fast as hell (specs said it would need a 200 mhz machine, mine had 900 mhz). after wiping win98 and doing a clean install of xp, i've had crashes over and over again. so it seems to be xp, since it's the same pc just with another operating system on it (nothing hardware related has been changed).

ive got a few other games tha

ive got a few other games that simply do not work in XP, for instance, Worms Armageddon. will start but wont load a game, just sits there.. im almost thinking about building a WIN98/ME box just for a few older games... this game will max out the computer just because of how sick the limits are set. in all honesty i dont expect to ever hit 5000 units. i just want it to run when i have like 700 or a little more. im thinking my system would run 98 very fine. that just means ill have to build a mega system for my xp stuff now Biggrin

already have that...

but for older games, that run on 386/DX 33MHz machines. i've got one of these as a spare computer when i wanna play colonization, doom oder civilization. runs even fine with wolfenstein 3d Wink

it's some kind of retro already, don't ya think? like playing around with an old c64...

Turns out the only reason I even knew about it was through various links from Wikipedia that spidered on down into TA and from there is a link to SC. I only chanced upon the links yesterday...

TA and all the games based on

TA and all the games based on that same engine crash often when they get too much going on. It's really annoying. There's nothing you can do about it.

well i hope the new engine wo

well i hope the new engine works better then the last one. seeing how i have to wait almost another year for it to come out. ive got a pc gamer mag my friend had with the article on the new game, and it looks awsome Biggrin i bet that it will mean upgrading to an athlon64 with a kick butt video card though.

found somthing cool for all you TA fans out there!

this link http://taspring.clan-sy.com/ is a group of people who made a new engine and is still being tested and built. while being multiplayer only, it looks awsome! ive watched videos of gameplay and its crazy. as soon as i get home from work ill be able to try the game. my laptop cant play it, requires some hardware video acceleration that my dell doesnt have.
