Compaq x1050

I have a Compaq Laptop that came to me with a Compaq x1050, that when you press down on the top left of the keyboard, the display cuts out. I have look in the machine, and made sure that the cables are all tight, and took the board out of the case and inspected all the chips to make sure nothing came loose. i cannot seem to find the problem. Do you think there could be something I am missing? The LCD goes out, but it does not freeze the machine. I know the LCD works fine, as it does stay on when in use without cutting out, but when you hit the top left part of the keyboard, the screen goes black.

I am not able to tell if the screen is displaying a pic because the way the screen is made, it is supposed to be anti-glare. This one is just puzzling me. Anyone have any ideas?

Note: if you bang the side of the case, it comes back, sometimes.... But it requires a healthy bang to get it to come back. It doesn't go out if you leave it like that, and not touch the keyboard.

to make it worse

I just talked with the client, and they said they can't send in the laptop to compaq, as he voided the warranty. he won't tell me what he did, but it has part of the case cracked. I assume that a drop may have made this problem appear. That case is cracked by the battery, but there are no scuffs on the upper left hand side of the screen.

If I have to track down a board for this "much new" laptop, I am going to have a hell of a time finding it, as it is pretty recent. I also want to add, that they only had this laptop a few months, and Compaq absolutety refuses to work on laptops that had physical damage to it at all. That means he can't send it in and have them fix it under his own $. this is a $1500 laptop, and am not sure what to tell him

perhaps? - replace and partout the old one

If it's that new, you may be surprised how much the individual parts are worth on eBay . . . maybe even enough to pay for the new one.

That's what I might do

I would do it, but I know he isn't going to like it, and I know this guy is kinda irrational, so i might just end up racking up some fees on his bill, b/c I know he is going to say that he wants the board replaced and not part it out. I know it means money to me, but it is ridiculous to look for a part that is going to cost him 3/4th laptop price, and still work on my other client's computers.

Standoffs?

Back in the day when I had a Compaq laptop *shudders* the logic board had a number of "standoffs". They kinda resemble the screws that go into the back of PC motherboards for attaching VGA plugs, but much smaller. On my rig, they fell out on a regular basis. When they'd fall out, I'd get all sorts of weird behaviour, such as the LCD cutting out, random lockups, distorted music playback, etc.

I don't know if that'll help, but its worth a shot.

Cheers,

The Czar

well...

this is what I did, I turned around and told the guy that I could not do anything for him, and basically told him to part it out. I think he took it and used it to trade up to a new computer. And HP desktop this time. Blum 3
