Hello,
I was wondering: could I get Virtual PC 7 (or whichever one is out now) and put Win98 on it? I wouldn't be form anything big, just a couple of old games. And I know that there will be some of you that will say "Oh, dont bother with virtual pc, it runs way to slow." But I just was curious as to if it would work or not.

...depends on a couple of things. I run VPC6 and Win 98 on my G3 900, and it's ok... but I would never trust it with XP (wwwaaaayyyy too damn slow) and it sometimes doesn't recognize USB devices (like my game controller) Also, be aware, that depending on the memory allocation and stuff, the scree will be considerably smaller than the full size of your display.
But if you're talking old games as in OLD OLD games, it might be ok...
...cause i have a gig of ram and the 1.9ghz processor....now, where could i get virtual pc 6?
also, the games are age of empires, command and conquer and zork (dos)

well i got vpc7 on there (some trial thingy) and put win98 on it just fine. then i almost started crying, because i had this amazing machine and i wanted to put some junk on it. i feel terible.
now, how can i uninstall it?

VPC has zero support for 3D ops, but if the SW you intend to use doesn't use 3D it ought to work OK.

Just drag to the trash and delete for the simplest "Evil-b-gone" Druidic ritual. Now in 'lite' spells! (for the anti-religeous people to practice and not be damned to heaven)
On a g5 you need vpc 7, 6 doesnt support the g5
I'd recommend Qemu or Bochs over Virtual PC.
it may be cheaper/better to pick up an old PII or PIII pc box for cheap. that would i did for my older pc games. i have an old PIII 450mhz dell
I nabbed my PIII 800 Dell w/ 512MB RAM and no HDD for $15 at a college auction. I'll never mess with VPC when the real thing is SO much cheaper and faster.
Also, I just found Q, a nice graphical version of Qemu, and its free. Also, it can emulate x86-64bit, ppc, mips, arm etc. MUCH nicer than vpc in my oppinion.
I've never heard of Q, I'll have to check it out sometime. How's the emulation speed?
VPC should be usable, seeing as PearPC runs OS X (emulating a PowerPC on a PC as opposed to a PC on a PowerPC Mac) fast enough to be usable, and OS X is much more power-hungry than Windows 98 (it's more comparable to running XP or even Vista in VPC on a Mac) - even things like the minimise-to-dock effect and the fly-out effect when you open windows are pretty smooth for me in PearPC.
However, if you've got the space then a real PC would still be better, in my opinion. I've seen 500 MHz Pentium IIIs (I seem to remember even a 900 MHz once) and up to 21 inch screens get given away for free, which is more than enough to run XP nicely - it's not really worth paying for an old PC as there's so many free ones around.
I downloaded the old Virtual PC 4 (for OS 9) and tried it on my 6100 once (a silly idea, I know, but I wanted to try it) but it didn't work - I think it needs a G3 or something to work. Never mind, kept the file for when I finally get a free G3 (saw a beige G3 advertised a couple of weeks ago but I was 10 minutes too late in claiming it :().
I just heard about it this morning on the Ubuntuforums.org PPC section.
VPC 7 with Win98SE is more than usable on my iMac G5. Windows 2000 is also very usable - in fact, I prefer it over Win98; it's a little more responsive (and of course much more stable). WinXP, however, is unbelievably slow, even after turning off most of the eye candy.
I'd say on my machine (single 1.8GHz G5, 600MHz bus), Win 2000 runs about as fast as a 300MHz Pentium II (except for some graphics/window redraws).
Also, FYI, I booted Damn Small Linux on my old 75MHz 486-based Thinkpad 701, and in VPC7 on my iMac. The iMac running it in emulation, absolutely crushed the Thinkpad.
