BTW, in your recent travels through Powerbook Innards Lane, have you, by chance, got the pinouts handy for the 1xx series rollerball?
Those three flex lines hangin' out the front that look like they run right thru the freakin' KBD appear to be the usual suspects. But I'm only guessing as I don't even HAVE one of those 'Books and . . .

I haven't even puzzled out those loopy paths on the 190's PutridPad interface for its spherically correct pointer upgrade as yet . . . that freakin' layout's downright Escheresque . . . haven't done the Duo's yet either, for that matter, seen any of those pinouts, the 100's or the 1400's anywhere online?

So, do you think this one shows some promise? I'm a little concerned that a lumpy or deepened bottom surface might not go over very well, I'd like to avoid dropping the entire bottom pan like I'm doing on BabyPB. The duo's lines need to remain sleek. A little bit heftier, textured gripping surfaces addition on the bottom that stays within the feets/front angle ought to work, whatcha think?

BTW, if you were talkin' about the 3400 CD adapter card's "addition" reduction program, it wasn't insanity at all. Read the logic and the basis behind it for that decision in one of the related threads, it was cooly calculated (and not very much) risk taking . . . with a hot side of hackivorous glee!

What about cutting the case only where the new electronics will protrude and hiding the extra gear beneath bubbles of plastic...hard to explain...sort of like what you can see on this Mig-21.
I'd thought of something similar for using the too-large PB screens on a compact Mac case, but moved on to other things instead.

could you possibly create a ring to take up space in the gap between top and bottom casing? that way, you wouldnt have to have anything protruding, and the tradeoff is that your book would be 1/4-1/2" thicker.
thats my thought, other than that, cut holes in the bottom, let the electronics protrude, glue a sheet of perspex, or other plastic to the bottom, with holes where the electronics protrude, and then bondo the whole works smooth. its hard to describe, but I think it'd work. Think of a Dr. Scholls Corn Cushon bondo'd to your foot, and you'll get the idea.

. . . considered most of the above when lookin' for alternatives for the BabyPB hack, AKA PowerBook100c/PPC/CD. The expansion ring I'd considered would have been a lot like the Duo's side bumpers. I thought I'd need to do that with the LCD, suprised the **** outta'me when the lid snapped shut during one of the test fittings. The 2300c lid seems like it's going to work already . . . and I haven't even started thickness reduction operations on the inside surfaces yet.
When I first started this, I thought I'd need to use part of a MiniDock case and I'd extend the projection underneath. That's not necessary, but something along the lines of a pressed aluminum or plexi blister will probably be employed, especially if I can work a fingertip grip depression into the design. I'd like to see if I can find a WiFi antenna that'll work inside the LCD housing, but the VAIO/Sony NIC with the tiny antenna that alk found would work well too.
No time to do much of anything for a week or two tho.

Ugh, speaking of wireless on a 5300... I'm still having trouble with my ORiNOCO 7.2 drivers. They install fine and seem to work, but no matter what I do, they refuse to recognize my wireless card(s). All of them, even the ORiNOCO brands. But this ONLY happens on a pair of my 5300's. The others work fine. It's _got_ to be an extension conflict. I thought at first that it might be a problem with the MV16-en, but no such luck. I did a clean install of 8.6 with no third party software but the ORiNOCO drivers, and the drivers still don't work right. UGH. Anyway, the hacked 4.x or whatever continue to work fine with the Sony card.
Your idea is a good one. If you can manage to flip the PMU 180°, then that will be a big help. Watch out for damage on the display cable, too. You'll have to not only flip it 180°, but you'll have to rotate it 180° as well. That introduces a significant risk of breaking the ribbon. I did something slightly less drastic with my 5300cs and saw firsthand how fragile the cable is. So far, my 5300c in the digital picture frame (where are those pictures of it, anyway...
) is holding up fine...
Could you use some sort of acetone to "melt" pits in the plastic where you want the finger grips?
