Hi,
Can anyone tell me if the upgrade to version 8.6 is a free download somewhere on the web, or do I have to purchase an upgrade? I just bought a new/sealed in box copy of OS 8.1, but now I found out that I need at least 8.5 for most of the software I wish to use. I'd really like to get 8.6 because I read that it was the last upgrade for version 8 of the OS. If anyone has any info on this please let me know.
Thanks
John
OS 8.0 - Purchase
OS 8.5 - Purchase
OS 9.0 - Purchase
8.1, 8.6, 9.04, 9.1, 9.2.1, 9.2.2 incremental free downloads.
So that means you have to buy OS 8.5 and than download 8.6
You could get Mac OS 8.6 (the full install, not just the 8.5 to 8.6 update) from MacDomain. 8.6 is the last version of OS 8.
Or try OS 9 from the same site. I run 9 on my 6100, which is older than your Mac, and it's fast enough and compatible with a lot more than 8.6 is.
Yeah, with OS 9 you'll be able to do iTunes, and an OS 9 install disc should be cheap and easy to find on an auction site. Best bet is to make sure your RAM is up to the 128mb maximum. 9.1 is pretty stable. You can do 9.2 via XPostFacto on a 5500, I believe.
