I have a 300mhz(OC:433mhz) tangerine clamshell with 64mb ram. Would it take a 512mb chip? I can get a 256mb for 1/3 the price. So what im asking is would it take it, and would it be a great deal faster with a 512mb than a 256mb?

I've tried a 512 chip in a Blueberry clamshell iBook (300 MHz), and it did not boot. 256 is the largest chip this machine will take, in my experience.
A 256mb stick is the largest size "officially" supported by Apple. I have seen people get a 512mb RAM stick to work, however. The more RAM the better, if you can afford it. Make sure you have updated the firmware.
Been there done that, works. I guess it's possible some SO-DIMMs may not work though.

I can confirm that at least /some/ 512 so-dimms will work in clamshell iBooks. I have one in the one I'm using as a server *shameless plug*.
My Kingston 512mb ram arrived today. I popped it in and it booted no problem. I installed mac OSX 10.4 tiger, and it runs quite well. But I was also wondering if it would help alot to install 10.3.9, would it really increase my speed that much?
The only thing I can say doesnt work very well is my network speed. Web pages are delayed, and the browsing is super slow. What can I do?
I have been told on good authority that you cannot take these things above X.4, but if you have overclocked it, then you may be able to go there. Just back up your system in case you have to pull it off.
BTW, congrats on the 512. I have a 256 in my 300MHz Blueberry since that was all they had at the time. Would you mind posting the exact part number you bought in case I want to upgrade mine too?
Thanks!
That's probably more a function of the graphics subsystem, about which you can do very little. You might try different web browsers, for example I find Firefox snappier than Safari on my systems.
Tiger is generally faster than Panther on all systems with enough RAM. You have enough RAM. What's your HD? A slow HD can make everything slow to a crawl, even with lots of RAM. A fast drive will make a big improvement.

The part number is "KTM-TP133/512" and here is a buy it now for $69 from the same seller as i bought it. http://cgi.ebay.com/Kingston-512MB-PC-133-144-Pin-SODIMM-Laptop-RAM_W0QQitemZ6872548341QQcategoryZ99261QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
As for the HD, its a stock 6gb thats next on my list to be upgraded.

Thanks for posting! When I last checked on the 512MB memory stick for my tangerine iBook, the price was substantially higher. Now I'm motivated to do this and get a few more miles of upgraded performances from my laptop. And my original 6gig internal HD has been whining a bit louder than usual, so I really need to think about a replacement.

I would suggest OtherWorldComputing (www.macsales.com) since all their products are garunteed to be compatible.
I've had nothing but bad luck with OWC ram. I bought a dimm that caused constant freezing an kernel panics, they sent a replacement that was even worse and wouldn't give me my money back, and my dad bought one that completely burned out his logic board (luckily the computer was under warranty, and he got it back from apple with a new logic board and a stern note telling him not to try installing the dimm again), and I've heard horror stories about their products from others as well. While some have not problems with them, I wouldn't take the chance.
