Running a G3 AIO Motherboard without the personality card?

I'm thinking about shoe-horning a G3 AIO motherboard, powersupply, and hard drive into a Quadra 605 case. Can I run a G3 AIO motherboard without the audio/personality card?

Thanks for any help

It will work without the pers

It will work without the personality card in OS X but not OS 9. It comes up with a system error upon boot without the Personality card. OS X doesnt use the card for anything so it works under OS X.

Wow, quick reply!

Thanks for the quick reply, I have to admit that I have already wedged the powersupply and hard drive in place (without knowing for sure about the personality card) and will now fix up the port cut-outs on the back of the case.

Not true! When I was overcloc

Not true! When I was overclocking my beige, I removed the wings card so I could get to the jumper block easier. When I put it back toghether, I forgot to put in the card. It worked fine without it, but I got no boot chime.

you had no boot chime cause y

you had no boot chime cause you have no audio the audio that powers the speakers comes from the personality card so if you have no personality card you have no sound.

but you can use the video cause of the onboard video port. make shure you have proper cooling

The older (silver-colored) Griffin iMics worked just spiffily under OS9. Haven't tried my newer (white) iMic in an OS9 box yet. I'll try later today and report back.

No network either...

Have a look in the archive for previous discussions about what does and doesn't work with the beige G3 board w/o personality card. I think it is just sound and networking, but without them, I can't think of anything useful to do with the Mac!

adapter

There's the option of using a right-angle adapter for a PCI card, much in the same way as the PDS AV card was installed in the 6100.

well, if you look at a PCI us

well, if you look at a PCI usb card, you notice that the card its self is only 1 - 1.5 inches high, if you take off the metal bracket, it would most likely be the same hight as the CPU heatsink.

Ethernet works !

I am currently running my G3 AIO motherboard without the personality card and the ethernet port is working. In fact I am using the system to post this message to applefritter. No sound though.

this is all killer news to me

this is all killer news to me as i have an AIO and a USB pci card. i plan on making it fit into some case and ditch the CRT. its all functioning perfectly as of right now but its just way too big! ill probly use a right angle PCI riser for my 16mb ATI rage card that im not using....

yea the ethernet will work ca

yea the ethernet will work cause its on the mobo, cant you just put a sound card in insted of useing usb for sound. it would be hard to fit more then one pci card in with the right angle pci adapters unless you can get them at diffrent hight and stair step them so you can get more than 1 pci card installed. it would be cool tho to get all 3 pci cards to fit in a mod like that

there are double and tripple

there are double and tripple risers out there, really neat stuff for servers that ive seen. a little pricey but will work very well.

I've always wondered if the single and double right angle risers out of 54/5500 and 64/6500s would work. Cause, you know, I seem to have more of them lying around to strip than I do rackmount servers.

the risers ive seen are unive

the risers ive seen are universal, the PCB board goes directly into a pci slot and cables go into the other slots if there are more then 1 on the riser. ive seen some for AGP and other slots as well, just google riser cards. there are tons, all different prices too.

It is done!

I have successfully installed the G3 AIO motherboard in a Quadra 605 case. I have posted some pictures in my gallery:

http://www.applefritter.com/image/uid/1025

I had to move the voltage regulator board - I couldn't close the case. I chopped down a scsi cable and used it to position the voltage regulator horizontally.
Now I have to somehow get some airflow over the processor heatsink. It gets a bit toasty after running for a while.

Sorry, images are here...

Sorry, I have never tried to post images to applefritter before.

And I haven't figured out how to post them inline either!

Kewl!

That's a really good bit of fitting.

Any chance you could provide us with the manufacturer and model # of that power supply? Or where you got it?

Now...it needs a laptop CD in there Acute

uh...

Have you thought of *minor* things, like, oh, say... Cooling? you will need a fan on the CPU if you are going to do this.
I think the G3's running pretty hot as CPU's, but, without proper cooling, it's going to crash as fast as a WinME machine (sorry, i just HATE That Operating system).

So you will need to think of a way to cool them. The early PowerPC's Ran pretty cool (up to the 604, which was the time it REALLY heated up)
I had a dead fan in my AIO case, that I had to replace when I got it, as the machine kept crashing (at the original speed) and I didn't find out until I noticed that it actually had a fan in the system.
So you will need to find a better cooling for that system. At least get yourself a copper heatsink and get a nice BIG fan on it. Then fashion your own cover. The LC's is going to kill it from the heat that builds up under the hood.

man that is a tight spot tho

man that is a tight spot tho i wonder if any of the pci riser's would work even if you was able to get one to work in it it would creat more of a cooling problem.

ok you know the dreamcast and the fan in it. try to find a few fana as small as that to mount in that case they would be small enuff not to take up much space and dont have a big power consumtion.

PS

Is that the stock power supply? And it looks as if you cut the bottom out of the case to fit it in there... right?

If you get crafty with some craft materials (leftover case scraps, cardboard, hot glue whatever) you could maybe create a duct from the PS fan to the CPU and get some air movement over the heatsink.

Oh! Ye of little faith...

Step by step my friends. First I wanted to make sure that I could get a powersupply, G3 motherboard, and hard drive to fit in a closed Q605 case. Then I wanted to make sure that I could fit all of the cables and power up the sucker. And now I have found a low profile fan/heatsink combination that fits on the G3 cpu. I have soldered it to the +12v line of the powersupply and everything still powers up. I will have pictures uploaded in a little while.

G3 cpu temperature limits?

Hello everyone,
What are the upper operating temperature limits of the G3 processor? I searched the internet and couldn't find much info about this. I am using Gauge Pro 1.0.2 and 1.1 to monitor the processor temperature. Are these programs very accurate?

Thanks

Fan/heatsink are working well.

I applied a little bit of thermal compound to the cpu, spread it around a bit by gently sliding the heatsink around and, using Gauge Pro, recorded some temperatures.

No load, 10 minutes = 47 C / 116 F

Running Graphing Calculator, Full Demo, for 3 hours = 59 C / 138 F

The temperature never goes above 59 C.

I will now present this hack to the Hardware Hacks forum.

Thanks to everyone for their help!

Phil
