you know whats sad? the lone

you know whats sad? the lone PowerPC machine sitting in the corner all by its self, isolated, alone. poor thing. if I had 2k, thats what I would spend it on to give the poor thing a home.

I wonder if that's Apple's new strategy to get rid of the last power PC macs, make them look lonely.

well, they must be in Apple s

well, they must be in Apple stores already, as somebody on flikr has the usual sexy unboxing action up of a black one:

here

yeah, unfortunantly for right now at least, the black ones come with a WHITE remote and a WHITE power brick. of course, they pack a white power adapter and white remote with the silver/gray mac mini and Macbook pros.

Plans

I was waiting for these to come out for me to make my purchase decision. It was one loaded up 15" macbook pro or now two decent spec macbooks. Guess the sigificant other won't be so mad. We tend to have matching phones (silver & black moto razr), so matching laptops shouldn't be bad. Granted, the integrated video is lame, but considering the fact that the bulk of what I do is iLife, filemaker, ms office, etc., it should work nicely for me. Remote control would be a big help with watching tv shows on tv through the laptop.

TV and PowerBook

I drive the TV with my PowerBook via S-video. It works nicely, though having to sit on the floor to control it is a pain. (watching Doctor Who episodes from the PowerBook)

What's the dillio with the new memory?

Can someone please give me a difinative answer on this:
For the new MacBooks, and MacBook Pros,
Do both the RAM sticks need to be identical?
i.e. you can have 2 X 512MB sticks,
OR
2 X 1gb sticks,
but NOT
1 X 512 and 1 X 1GB (giving 1.5GB total RAM)?
tia

The $200 for 20GB and a Core

The $400 is for 20GB, a SuperDrive and a Core Duo 2.0GHz instead of the 1.83GHz, oh and black. Wink Notice they don't have a Core Solo. I'm guessing there may be a Macbook Mini on the way with a ULV Core Solo or something. Maybe a Duo-esque machine, but with an 11" or 12" screen...

http://www.apple.com/macbook/macbook.html

Edit: no wait, I see! Ack! $1499 to get it in black? Does it come with a Sith initiation or something too for that? I'd take the $1299 White one and wait for the fervor to die down over the black ones. White was the new black. Now black is the new black...

Apple advertises a contradict

Apple advertises a contradiction:

Intel GMA 950 graphics processor with 64MB of DDR2 SDRAM shared with main memory

Memory available to Mac OS X may vary depending on graphics needs. Minimum graphics memory usage is 80MB, resulting in 432MB of system memory available.

So, the GPU gets to use 64B of the system RAM for VRAM, but the machine uses up 80MB to give 64mb? What? Why'd they steal another 16MB from the CPU?

Great Joke on Slashdot

The black and white iPods don't have a price difference, why would they charge a premium for something like that on the MacBook.

So your laptop can match your turtleneck?

Smile Makes sense for all the Jobs fanboys.

They're a really good value for the money. I like the return of the magnetic lid, and the keyboard looks significantly changed. If I could work without a dedicated GPU, then I'd buy one of these over the $2499 Macbook Pro. As it is, the Macbook Pro is an even better value now that the speeds are boosted.

The more I look at them, the more I realize that this is a very, very well designed replacement for the iBook. It refreshes the case, fixes the problem with feet falling off, and the only mistakes I can think of are an unforgiving keyboard design and the fact that the LCD is one of those infernal models with no anti-glare filter. I hate those screens; Apple, give us a choice!

oh, the way you made it sound

oh, the way you made it sound, like you have a TV tuner card to WATCH tv on your powerbook. not watch your powerbook on TV.

(btw, I can do that too with SVID on my PBG3, but I use a SVID->composite adapter because the SVID jack on my DVD/VCR is ourtput. (the combo hooks to my TV via coax. yes, my TV only has Coax. I like them like I like my computers, OLD!! )

what's the dillio with glossy screens?

Why would you want your screen to be glossy??

Would someone mind explaining that?

Glossy screens!!! I've got the same question. At a place I was subcontracting, they got a batch of higher end laptops (the top of the line vaio, I believe) and were talking about how "great the screen was" because it did an absurdly high resolution. All I could see was the fact that the icons and text were idiotically small and that I could easily see what donkey porn my coworker was drooling over due to the reflection. I'll take the old, plasticky, non reflective screens.

re: what's the dillio with glossy screens?

I'll take a crack at that - I imagine the glossy screen is sharper and brighter than a screen with an anti-reflection surface, which by its very nature tends to slightly blur and dull the visible image. There ought to be a real advantage to the glossy screen for those who require the most accurate color display possible. The choice of glossy vs. matte is offered because other folks will find the glossy screen's reflections unacceptable.

CRT texture perhaps

Most of the CRT's I've encountered have a glossy finish to them. I've yet to play with a glossy lcd, so I don't really know. We'll know soon enough when I get a chance to play with one of the new macbooks.

On a side note, having had a chance to look at the service manual (came out last night), I am very impressed. It won't be the easiest of machines to work on (not that the outgoing iBooks were terribly easy either), but I think that it's a much much more rugged machine. Think AIbook with a polycarb case. I'm excited.

re: glossy screens

yes, you're right on that. "glossy" screens give a more crisp and brighter image than normal LCD's. i have seen several sony laptops with that screen. it looks really good until you turn on the lights in the room - then you can use the display as a make-up mirror Wink

but so far i've heard the mirroring is not so heavy on the macbook screens...

Hmmm ....

So maybe that's what they mean by "display mirroring" ...
