HELP: OS 7.5.3 and Color classic with Mystic problems

Hello Everyone!

I am having a problem installing OS 7.5.3 on my CC with Mystic upgrade. I installed OS 8.1 a while back before I knew that a hack was required to allow OS 8.1 to work on a CC. Now, I wish to install OS 7.5.x back on my system, but I keep getting an install error. I downloaded OS 7.5.3 off of Apple's old software webpage. Now when I attempt to install the OS I get the following error message "This startup disk will not work on this Macintosh model. Use the latest nstaller or update this disk to the latest installer." Does anyone know what is wrong and how I can get this to install? I have an OS 7.5 CD that came with my CC when I bought it on eBay, but it won't install I get an error that the version is not for that system or something like that. I'm hoping to be able to install 7.5.3, but right now I keep getting the above error. Can anyone help me with this? I'm also fairly new to the MAC, so I don't know too much about the OS or any tricks to get 7.5.3 to install properly.

Thanks

John

PS: What is the best OS version to use on a CC Mystic? I heard 7.6.1, is that true and if so, where can I find OS 7.6.1 I did not see it on Apple's old software website.

I'm pretty sure none of the v

I'm pretty sure none of the various hacks to install OS 8 on unsupported hardware actually changed the ROM of the machine... so I'd bet it's the hard drive giving you grief. Maybe when you installed os 8 it formatted the hard drive with MacOS Extended Format(i think that's what its called), and OS 7.5.X or earlier can't read that (maybe 7.6 can?).

its probably not the hd being

its probably not the hd being formatted in hfs+, the 7.5.3 installer would not even see it. Its more likely that you updated the hd drivers and the 7.5.3 installer doesnt like them. what you might try is either trying to update them with the 7.5.3 installer or something like silverliling or fwb hard disk toolkit. Good Luck!

How do I update the HD driver

How do I update the HD drivers? As I mentioned I am fairly new to the MAC world. How can I change the hard drive drivers from the 7.5.3 installer? When I put the first 7.5.3 disk in and the system boots up, it starts gets to the smilie disk icon, then gives me the error message. Is there a way to have it change the hd drivers before that point?

Thanks
John

8.1 is supported . . .

on a Mystic, at least one that has the 640x480 mod. It's only the original '030 CC MLB that needs a hack to run 8.1. I'm not clear why you don't just stick with the 8.1 installation?

No matter what I tried the OS

No matter what I tried the OS won't work on my system. It keeps giving me that typical error. I'm not sure of the exact message now, and I'm interested in going back to 7.5.x. I'm not interested in hacking or fiddling with software to get 8.1 to work. I know 7.5.x works fine without any hacks or mods needed to be made either soft or hardware based. Saying that, I want to get my MAC up and running and finally get to enjoy it. I have yet to enjoy the system becasue as soon as I got it I installed 8.1 and since then I can't use the system, nor can I get 7.5.3 to install and erase OS 8.1.

Bottom line, is that I just want to get my system running and currently with 8.1 it doesn't. 7.5.x should resolve that problem if I can get the install to begin.

Lets start over.

How are you booting the Classic? Are you using a diskette to boot it? You skipped this part. Also, what OS is running on the diskette? You may have a sort of reverse bootstrap problem. By formatting the drive with a newer utility, and then updating the drivers for that drive, you may have made it incompatible with the older OS installer. It may be possible to get a newer version of a bootable diskette, but one that has the older disk utility. By reformatting the drive and installing the older disk driver from Apple you might resolve this. I have a ton of old macs, external scsi CD drives, external hard drives etc. I forget that people dont have the resources lying around, and this can make things harder by far. Post more info, let's figure this out.

dvsjr, Thanks for offe

dvsjr,

Thanks for offering to help me with this issue. Also, thanks to everyone else whose posted regarding this thread.

Now, on to business. Smile

My CC Mystic has OS 8.1 installed from CD. It may have updated the hard drive driver, I'm not too familiar with how the MAC OS installs. I am primarily a PC user, and my MAC knowledge is very limited right now, but I hope to gain knowledge once I can get the OS working and begin to explore the system. Anyhow, on the PC's with Windows there is a method to delete the partition or totally wipe out the hard drive data. Is there a similar program on these classic MACs? Perhaps if there is a way to wipe out the drive contents that would allow the install to work. Would a partition deletion, or wipe erase the driver as well?

Here is what I have: OS 8.1 on CD. This was installed and is now on my CC and giving me the problems as documented on various CC Mystic sites.

I have a 7.5 CD, but when I attempt to install it, it says the disk is not for this sytem, or something similar to that.

I also have OS 7.5.3 from Apple's site and this is on 3.5" floppy. When I attempt to install 7.5.3 off of floppy I get the following message. "This startup disk will not work on this Macintosh model. Use the latest nstaller or update this disk to the latest installer."

I hope I've supplied the needed info to try and resovle this issue. If not, please let me know.

Thanks a bunch.
John

PS: I like your pic. Bob Ross was/is the best. Smile I miss his show. Sad On a good note, at the local Target store they have Bob Ross T-shirts. I actually bought a few. Smile

Can you...

Can you boot from the Mac OS 8 CD, and run the drive setup utility from the older OS? I'm wondering if you can reformat the drive and install the apple disk drivers from the older utility, while you are running OS 8. To be fair, I'm not positive I know why you can't boot, I am just trying to think of what it could be. I dont think that HFS or HFS+ is the issue, I think the smoking gun might be the actual hard drive driver. Reformatting the drive (and installing the older Apple driver) might allow you to install System 7.

re: typical error

Under Mac OS 8.1, what error? I'm thinking that whatever is troubling your 7.x install is related to whatever error you see under OS 8.1.

A Mystic can theoretically run any Mac OS from 7.1 to 8.1. I'm aware of no technical reason for 8.1 to not run on a 640x480 rez Mystic. If there's something I'm missing I'm always happy to learn new stuff. Acute

Is your Mystic 640x rez?
