And willingly become part of the collective! "You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile."

I've never submitted my [url=http://www.daveandyvonne.com.site,[url] but it still gets at least a weekly visit from the Googlebot and various other spiders. But getting a Googlebot visit is the easy part. Getting your site listed on the first page of a search is the holy grail of website management, and people make large sums of money for making that happen.

Resistance isn't quite futile

Resistance isn't quite futile. Read about robots.txt files if you aren't interested in having your website crawled by spiders.

Please go on...

Ok, so what are some of the secrets people are paid large sums for getting your URL kicked up to the front of the line? Maybe we could start a list.

Being that I'm in the search industry...

Google calls their technology "Page Rank". It's not perfect, however, it's awfully good in most situations. While the actual details of their technology are kept under lock and key, I can tell you that the first results (in the "sponsored links" box) are paid for and those after it are issued in order of popularity and relevance.

Each site has a page rank from 0 to 10 (but it's actually a lot more granular than that). The more sites that link to you, the more popular your site is, and therefore, they assume, it's more relavent and authoritative.

"Link farming" is one thing that big companies do to increase your pagerank. They have tons of sites that do nothing but link to hundreds or thousands of other sites. Google bans your site from their results with the quickness if your site shows up one one of these link farms and they catch you. So that doesn't work too well.

Link exchanges are okay, I suppose. You have a few affiliate sites, you host a link to them, they host a link to you. Win-win. That is fine.

The best way, though, is to simply put out good content that people will want to link to and read. Then, your site will naturally climb the list.

Case and point, one website I've made outlines how to work on, tweak, and hack the Ford Focus. I don't pay google anything (although I do have AdSense, but it doesn't help my page rank).

When you google for "Ford Focus Air Conditioning Repair" my site is the second one in the main results.

Good content and lots of links going to my site is all it takes to bump me near the top.

As Ax0n so correctly notes, g

As Ax0n so correctly notes, good content which generates links from other sites that are well ranked by Google will generate a good Google ranking for your own site. Depending on when the Google bot searches your site, it may be weeks until you get a good listing, but you will be listed eventually.

Remember that if you are talking about Macs on your web page, "good content" essentially means "unique content". There are thousands of sites that list personal Mac collections. They are all very worthy, but interest in them is limited to people like us. "Unique content" isn't always difficult. If you own any interesting peripherals or expansion cards, write about them -- describe how you got them to work, what their limitations are, why they are special. Link to anything useful and hunt around Google's Usenet archive for related information that may be difficult to find. Include photos, screen dumps and scans from the manuals to illustrate your point. Mail two or three other web site owners with similar content, but don't spam. Don't get upset if you don't get a link immediately -- I try to perform factual corrections asap, but new info and links may take weeks to be added.
