User error causes display to no longer function in OS X. Any solution?

Hi All,

My monitor was working fine with 10.4.7. I decided to up the resolution to the native 1280x1024 and it worked fine. I then tried changing the refresh rate to 85Hz. The monitor no longer worked and reported that the signal was out of range.

I rebooted OS X into single user mode and trashed the display preferences from the command prompt. The machine now boots fine into OS X, at a low resolution - but as soon as I set the display back to 1280x1024, the software remembers the previous 85Hz setting and the display goes blank.

Anyone know a solution for this? I.e Where the darn prefered refresh rate is stored?

Thanks,

T

When you Hear the bong at boo

When you Hear the bong at boot up, hold down command(apple)+option+P+R. wait for it to reboot about 2-3 times before you release the keys. If that doesn't work, when you boot up, go to display prefs and set the refresh as low as possible, then try and up the res to 1280x1024.

As soon as I put the res back

As soon as I put the res back up to 1280x1024 it uses the 85Hz refresh rate instead of the 60-70 I want it to.

You do know that you can abor

You do know that you can abort the res change without rebooting if it doesn't work right? Just hit esc after you change the res and it doesn't work.

You could also install Switch

You could also install SwitchResX and mark that resolution+refreash rate combo as incompatible. SwitchResX would also allow you to set the resolution+refreash rate combo of your choice.

It does not seem to work - it just changes the resolution and does not give any options to cancel as it believes it should wokr.

Edit: I'll try switchresX, thanks Smile (I did try someother res changing program, but it was SOOOO slow in Rosetta...)
