ibook freeze

it wouldn't surprise me if someone on here has asked before, but search isn't very good. now that the gpu in my ibook is apparently back in working order, i find that it occasionally freezes. it's done it in both x and 9, but typically when using itunes. it has also frozen after booting and then doing nothing. firmware isn't installing, which must mean mine is up to date. i have no idea what could be causing this. i think it's either the gpu overheating from the padding pressing it in place, the system having internal problems, or as my friend suggested the hard drive. this computer did fall off a desk while running, but i've gotten two running systems and half a gigabyte of music on it with almost no problem. any other ideas?

For a G3 class machine under 1.0 ghz ...

I would recommend 10.2 or 10.3 . I haven't used 10.1 since 2002, and occasionally come across users with 10.1 at work, I bump them up to 10.2 at a minimum.

i just installed 10.3 for the sake of being able to put on later diagnostics software. the computer crashed twice on the second disc of the installer, so i put an ice pack under the hard drive/gpu side and that kept it running. it's already crashed three times since the install, particularly when the hard drive is running. i think it's my gpu pressure repair insulating the logic board rather than help hold the gpu in place and dissipate heat. just too much heat right there when the hard drive heats up.

If you've shimmed your GPU wi

If you've shimmed your GPU with something non-conductive, sounds like you'd better replace it with something heat conductive like metal or a heat transfer pad.

i had a feeling. should i put something more conductive under the heat shield like a piece of copper instead? and obviously, need to get rid of the felt on top of it. not only is that an insulator, i sometimes manage to flatten it and loosen teh gpu.

If that "felt" was there when

If that "felt" was there when you bought it, it's a heat transfer pad.

it's not. they're felt pads t

it's not. they're felt pads that you put on the bottoms of chairs or pottery that i put in to help with pressure on the gpu. they are not by any means thermal pads, and i'm sure they're contrubuting to the problem at this point.

i belive i fixed it. took out

i belive i fixed it. took out the metal shim i had between the gpu and heat shield as well as the felt pads outside the heat shield. those were replaced with a portion of an old cd as well as an old business card to spread out the pressure over the heat shield. the gpu works fine still, and the computer is still yet to crash from overheating (it has been running on carpeting as well as my lap).

with that, i was slaving over it last night trying to remove the paint from the screen casing. i don't reccomend it unless you have strong nails and plenty of q tips, paper towels, and rubbing alcohol.
