Tiger on a B/W

How would Tiger perform on a B/W G3 400 with the faster Rage 128 card, 40MB RAM, and a 40 GB drive?

i was running it on my beige

i was running it on my beige g3 with a 7200 rpm drive, 512 mb ram, and it oc'd to 300mhz. It also had a reflashed radeon 7000 card. In that configuration, it screamed!

I assume you mean something other than 40MB RAM. No version of OS X will run with that amount.

I used to run Tiger Server on my B&W; it had a 350MHz G3 overclocked to 400MHz, 768MB RAM, 40GB HDD and a very paltry 4MB Rage Pro video card. It was pretty snappy, actually.

I used a B/W G3 as a Replica

I used a B/W G3 as a Replica LDAP Server and it perfomed quite nicely. It was a 300MHz, 340MB RAM, 20GB HD, Rage 128 16MB(or whatever was stock) video card.

Whoops! I meant 640MB. Thanks for pointing that out. Smile

Well...

As soon as I get a DVD drive compatible with a B/W G3 I'll let you know. A package for an Upgrade Tiger DVD arrived yesterday. Smile

I've put DVD drives from PC's I've found on the side of the road into B&W's that work fine, and are even bootable, and they're often better than the OEM Apple DVD drives.

Coincidence ... !?

I just installed Tiger on my B&W (450 MHz, 1GB RAM) yesterday. Used XPostFacto (because B&W has no "built-in" firewire -- it's technically on a daughter card) and installed from the 4-CD Tiger set I got from Apple.

First boot was a bit wonky, and had one kernel panic after I ran the 10.4.8 combo update, but since then, it seems happy.

You don't need XPostFacto to install Tiger; it'll boot and install just fine on its own.

At the moment I have 3 DVD drives. One is a Behavioral Tech DVD-ROM drive purloined from an HP Pavilion desktop (at work right now) and a NEC DVD+/-RW dual layer drive in my main PC here. The last one is an AOpen dual layer drive that appears to be REALLY flaky. I can burn DVDs but it won't read pressed discs. Started this fresh out of the box. Exceptionally frustrating.

Ditto. I have probably used about 6-8 different DVD Drives in my G3, in both a beige, and a B&W. There really is no such thing as a specific apple drive. I think Apple just slaps their logo on the drive and ships them out.

In the process of success

I went out and bought a Lite-On 20x DVD+/-RW drive. The Tiger DVD started right up and it's installing now. I'm looking forward to it!

You bring up a question that's on my mind these days (which maybe should be the subject of a new thread?). I've not yet done any DVD burning. From what I've read, you should have at least an 800mhz G4, and preferably at least a Quicksilver, in order to do tolerable DVD burning. Is this true? So putting a DVD burner in a B&W sounds "pointless"--sorry, I can't think of a better word. And then how do the max burn speeds relate to processor speed? Will an 800mhz Quicksilver be able to do a 20X DVD burn, or will it suffer buffer underruns all the time? Major DVD burning sounds like quicksand. If anything, does anyone have a good link to good info?

It did sound like a new thread, so I went ahead and created one here:

the problems he will have

is not just related to the CPU, it's also related to the IDE Bus. Speeds of an IDE Bus rarely reach, if they do, the actual speed it is rated for. These are done in burst modes. but if you are trying to burn something that is supposed to stay constantly at the burst mode (i.e. takes too much data rate and exceeds what the IDE normally does) then it is going to fail.

Tiger is done!

So far so good.

As far as burning DVDs, I haven't tried it yet. Before I had an external CD-RW drive connected via Firewire. I'm not sure if you meant a video DVD or a data DVD Hawaii Cruiser, but once I finish an upload I'll try data. At the moment I have no video to burn.

Supposedly all recent burners have buffer underrun protection, so even if it can't feed data to it fast enough it shouldn't make a coaster. That's the theory anyway. Smile

On my B&W g4 500 with a flashed Radeon 7000 I have found out that Tiger will only install if I it it on a unix partition

You don't really need Firewir

You don't really need Firewire onboard to load any version of OS-X. I think that is just Apple's way of discouraging Frankenmacers from entering the OS-X arena with badly outdated machines cobbled together from several generations of parts.

Strange...

I didn't use XPostFacto at all for my B&W G3.

However my Tiger DVD was an upgrade disc and required 10.3 to be installed. I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it or not.

I have had a chance to burn a DVD with it. It works OK at 2x, but would stall at 4x.
