Accessing SMB shares with Mac OS 8.6-9.2.2

I'm running into a minor issue - how would I go about accessing SMB shares with a Mac running OS 8.6 -9.2.2? I've looked into Mocha SMB, which appears to be long gone, Connectix Double Talk - same story, and Thursby Software's DAVE is a little pricey for what I'm looking to do. Does anyone have any suggestions for what I can do? The machines can't go to OS X because of software and hardware being driven by them. (long story)

very limited options

According to MacWindows.com (and, of course, Thursby's site), the only company still supporting OS 9 SMB is Thursby Software.

What are your SMB shares on?

What are your SMB shares on? Instead of adding to the clients, would it be possible to change the server(s) by adding Appletalk through netatalk, etc.?

The shares ...

are on a Windows 2k3 server that I do not have the ability to change. So, I'm in a situation where I have to adapt to it. I've been playing with the trial version of DAVE, but the price is really putting me off.
