another working A-ONE

Hello again,

I did it....and it worked.

After soldering all parts as descriped, I tested the AC/DC adapter and the green LED on the A-ONE lighted.
So everything was ready to insert the ICs.

First step I connected the A-ONE to my Philips portable TV and I saw the ACHATZ intro; a RESET and I was in the working WOZ Monitor.
It was amazing, it worked immediately I did not make a single mistake. I had great fear from this moment before - but it worked!

Second step: Downloading ZTerm for MacOS X v 1.1beta7

Configuration I had from:
http://web.mac.com/lorddoomicus/iWeb/Doomd/Blog/66CB57D5-49ED-4496-9EB4-796A5244A2D6.html

I connected my iMacG5 with the USB/RS232 adapter
USB to RS232 adapter from Manhattan purchased by MISCO

Power On: everything worked fine. I inserted the MOONLANDER programm via Terminal and started the program.
After a few trials I was able to land on the moon. Great!

The next steps will be to work with the assembler and perhaps a housing.

Many thanks to Franz Achatz for this excellent kit;
San Bergmans for his website which gave me good support
and special thanks to TomOwad, his book is the base for my theoretical and practical knowledge to build this kit.
Italianapple recommended me the Manhattan adapter; which workes perfect with ZTerm and an iMacG5.

When I surfed around yesterday I saw a new KIMreplica project from VBriel....
(www.brielcomputers.com). A future target!

Hello minimani,

this is nice to here that everything just works fine.
That's the way it is designed for.
As easy as possible.

By the way, my friend Paolo di Leo (italianapple) from Italy, is invited for showing
his A-ONE at the AAA-Museum this week in Genova/Italy Lol
The AAA Museum is the largest Apple Museum outside the United States !!!

Congratulations from me too!

Congratulations from me too! I received my A-ONE kit a few days ago and when I have some spare time I hope it'll work like yours.

I ordered the same USB to serial adapter for my iMac G5. Also heard of it from italianapple...

Greetings from the Rhein-Neckar region Wink

Hello Franz, nice to hear

Hello Franz,

nice to hear that the A-ONE will be shown in Genova; hope for you it will find same more fans and increase the market.
I hope also to see some photos here in the forum from the exhibition.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to show the kit at the MacExpo in Cologne, it is not so far from you and i think it will be in november this year?

Greetings

Hello Paolo, thank you for

Hello Paolo,

thank you for the congratulations. Do you live near Genova? My sister in law lives in Lignano/ Veneto, I care for her iMac virtually by phone.

As I mentioned Manhattan adapter/Zterm works fine.

I meanwhile tested it with my iMacG5, iMac bondyblue and ibookG3 all with with MacOS X.

But I also have an old MacClassic II from my student days, with system 7.1 on it.
I will try it there with MacTerminal.

There is the question: I need to have a serial cable with DIN8 on the one side and DB15 on the other side. Where to get those cables?
I only have a modem cable DIN8 to DB25; will a adapter DB25 to DB16 work?

Do I need a nullmodem cable as used at PCs?

Where are the "cable wizzards" in the community...

Thanks a lot.

Hello UncleTom, just do yo

Hello UncleTom,

just do your kit step by step and I am sure it will work.

My "little difficulties" were:
The codes of the resistors; my daughter prechecked her fathers work-and she loved to be in an responsible position.
The installation of transistor with the heatsink was not clear immediately-in this moments I checked again not to make a mistake.
Take care of the capacitors installation (minus is signed); but this should be no problem.

I am using a "stylish" plug power pack from EGSTON (electronic, very light and small)
EGSTON N2series, 9,0 V 0,66A 6W purchased from CONRAD 51 09 31

I will bring some photos to the net, I am in negotiation with my son on www.markopolo.org for the webspace or even here.

Good luck,

minimani

Hello UncleTom

Hello UncleTom, the dimension of the resistor could also be find out with a simple Multimeter (if you have one).
my difficulties were: 1.the polarisation of the LED (short Leg is - (Kathode) long Leg is + (Anode)
2. be careful with the oscilator, I have damaged it somehow. A repairing was needed (Thanks Franz!)
3. the direction of the 1Mhz oscilator is important. (3 round Corners - one other Corner!)
4. A few of the resistors where others then printed on my Hardware Manual (Component Side and Schematics) (could be fixed in your Manual?)

R 1 must be a 4K7 not 2K2
R 2 must be a 2K7 not 1K8
exactly like printed in the part list!

5. Some capacitors have a polarisation (the electrolytic ones)
the polarisation is shown on the Component Side and on the capacitors

Have fun building your A-One!

And another one!

I almost had the same feeling as minimani, but it seems that I lost transistor Q2. I overlooked it in the parts list and even when I checked my soldered A-ONE. My fault, but with the help of Franz Achatz I used a compatible transistor from another old circuit board. My A-ONE then worked correctly. Fortunately this transistor is only used for the video output so nothing was damaged.

Thanks again to Franz for supporting me so fast!

@SchwindS: Did you get my email regarding the Cherry compact keyboard? In the meantime I got one!

I also tried zterm for my iMac. Is there a setting so zterm uses the Apple I character set? I always need to enter letters with the shift key (or caps lock). And I cannot enter CTRL sequences (CTRL-H for reset, CTRL-L for clear screen). Nothing happens...

Is the splash screen also sent through the serial port?

the splash-screen is only act

the splash-screen is only activated one time when the A-ONE is powered up.
This is made in the ATMEGA32 Videocontroller and will not be sent
via the serial port.

best regards
Franz
