"Mac-quariums"

Am I the only one morally offended by folks turning perfectly good cases in to 'Mac-Quariums'?

Am I missing something?

There are so many good hacks to do with these older machines.

Would someone please tell me what the charm of this is, because all I see is a failed opportuinity to do something really cool like try to squeeze a Cube into an SE/30 case, or like me, try to drop an LCD, two 120GB HDs, a CD-RW, AND a DVD ROM into a Rev. A iMac.

The reason people make MacQua

The reason people make MacQuariums is because:

1. Otherwise the computer would end up in a landfill,
2. They don't have the technical experience or money to hack a computer into it
3. Not everyone is geeky enough to *want* to hack a computer into it
4. It's cool and funny.

If you're "morally offended" by MacQuariums, I suggest you get outside more. There's more to life than computers, you know.

Would you prefer those cases

Would you prefer those cases ended up in a landfill? The sad fact is, sometimes iMacs die, and that exoskeleton can be more expensive to fix than to put the guts from the iMac into something else.

BTW; if you'd like a bondi blue iMac case to try your mod on, I've got one that you can have for the cost of shipping. Let me know if you're interested.

Actually, i think it's safe to say you are the only one "morally offended" by turning a mac into a place for your fish to live. I mean isn't it just another kind of "hack"? I mean its just a tool.

Plastic and metal...

It's been said before, when a bunch of people here got their pants all a-flutter over the PC in G5 case hoax, that at the end of the day, computers - Macs included - are just tools. Mass-produced metal and plastic. This also came up in the Powerbook picture frame threads.

Being tools, the importance of a computer is how useful or enjoyable it is (whether in function or aesthetic) to the owner not to the rest of "society".

People tend to use a bit of hyperbole when expressing their dislikes, but if you actually consider a Macquarium immoral, may I suggest you need to re-examine your morals and how seriously you take this fun hobby.

A simple mod...

I always thought that a simple mod for a early iMac would be to remove the MB and ensure the CRT was good and use it as a dumb monitor for an extended desktop with another machine.

I will PM about your offer - (THANKS!)

OUUUUUUUCH!!!

Okay, I get it! Smile

I did not mean literally morally offensive (just could not find a better phrasing for it).

I have never had luck with fish short of teaching them this neat trick where they float upsie down - I just can't make them stop doing it.

I admit, it is creative in its own right. I have ALWAYS looked at computers (especially Macs) as being tools. I work all day on a mainframe and come home to do graphics on my Mac. I just did not realize that so many older cases were without a more 'tool oreinted' use. I agree it is better thatn the landfill.

Always haven been the child that takes his things apart to see how they work and what can be done with the raw pieces, I often take for granted that not everyone is into hard-core nuts and bolts as I fancy myself to be.

I apologize if I offended anyone. the whole thing just seemed like the proverbial petrock to me and I did not fully see they draw.

I do get out, but the only fish I make it a point to keep up on is sushi Wink

Respectfully yours,
Doug-Doug The Mighty (mighty sorry if I offended)

See? There's that hyperbole thing I mentioned. Wink

I don't think you offended anyone. No harm done, no bruised egos, no need for forensics to bring in the luminol. You shouldn't be sorry for stating an opinion, even if it came across stronger than intended. Likewise, a number of us opined back. All good clean fun, no one got personal.

Now let's all get back to..er, whatever it is we were doing.:macos:

Doug-Doug, is your avatar Henry Kissinger? It's too small to see clearly...
Holy crap, it's been a looong time since there was a good political dust-up in Remember Outdoors...and I'm not going to launch the first volley.;D

Henry Kissinger

Yes, it is indeed Kissinger, thanks for noticing,

I was at a technical conference in Vegas a year back and he was a keynote speaker, very good public speaker.

My fascination is partly from the cool voice and some of the humor about him on shows like SNL back in the day. Also a good Monty Python song about him on 'the Contractual obligation Album'.

Everyone seemed to have an avatar but me and the best one I had on hand was Henry. I do have a cool one of my wife in silohuette, but that could give folks the wrong impression about me since most seem to make a personal statement. Since I cannot get the Monty Python Henry Kissinger song out of my head, I went that route.

I am still learning about some of this site's features, but am afraid of sparking another crazy AF dream like I had a few weeks back. (chek the one about 'a sign I have been spending too much time on AF')
