Changing $00 file type for IIgs files

I'm using an old 1400c to write to 800K prodos disks for my Apple IIgs.

I can get them on there, but i'm trying to use GSHK.SEA and its saying file type is $00 or unknown....

I'm using ProTYPE for the mac to convert these files to something the IIgs can 'supposedly' read.

I'm kinda lost at this point--I'd like to be able to just copy the files over to get my IIgs working, but i'm stuck with a whole bunch of files my IIgs thinks are documents.

My first goal is to use ProSel to scan my HDD and get it working again (bad blocks)

Any help is appreciated

Smile

Take a look at the FAQ here:

Getting decompression stuff bootstrapped is a tedious little task. The introduction in this doc will help understand why:

Re: tchange wont BLOAD bc its a u

Ok, now I know you didn't RTFM. Smile Here's the important parts:

Download the file TCHANGE.BIN as a binary file to your PC or Mac. Move the file (e.g. via NULL modem or by copying to a ProDOS diskette) to your Apple2.

Probably, the file will end up as a TXT type file. Make a temporary backup copy of the file.

To get a BRUN-able BIN type file, start ProDOS-8 BASIC and BLOAD the file:

BLOAD TCHANGE.BIN, TTXT, A2048

DELETE TCHANGE.BIN

Then, BSAVE the file:

BSAVE TCHANGE.BIN, A2048, L15711

TCHANGE.BIN is now BRUN-able. BRUN TCHANGE.BIN to start the filetype changer program.

And when I do that, i get a prodos error that says

INVALID FILE TYPE

I did RTFM, ProDOS is giving me problems. I did what the TXT file says, it wont load properly

I followed that verbatim, it just wont work. I even tried ProTYPE and it still doesnt work

I forgot about this - no need

I forgot about this - no need to do all the bootstrapping. Just download this .dsk and make a diskette of it:

Read and write ProDOS-formatt

Read and write ProDOS-formatted 720KB and 1.4MB floppy disks

How can I format 720K disks on a Mac?

That depends on what hardware you have. If it isn't beige G3 or earlier, you can't. See:
http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=36900
Your options on newer hardware are all in the serial transfer realm - having the Apple II write its own disks from the images.

I dont own anything newer tha

I dont own anything newer than my 3400c

I checked out CiderPriess, my question is this:

Mac reads and formats in 800k (ive done this on my 1400c), my PC will format in 720k. The PC does not read (or is not supposed to read) 800k disks of ANY format. Could I format a 720K dos disk and use it in my Apple IIgs? I see no alternative....

I appreciate your time on this. I'll go try CiderPress

No. Not without expensive and rare extra hardware on the IIgs that you don't have. You could use CiderPress to uncompress your files on the PC, send it back over to your Mac over your network, then write an 800k disk from there and move it to the IIgs.

Yeah I tried that just now, t

Yeah I tried that just now, the filetypes again are stripped once i copy it over to the IIgs. I guess at this point i'm stuck with getting a CF card and intreface for the IIgs and using only the PC to copy files over.

Thanks anyway!

What about just doing whole-d

What about just doing whole-disk images over the serial line? Or, is your objective to move individual files?

Re: I could move archives over se

I think you need to get set up to do whole-disk serial transfers. Review this page for connections you need to set up:
http://adtpro.sourceforge.net/connectionsserial.html#IIgs%20modem%20port%20cabling
and, after sending the ADTPro disk image over first, send this disk image over next:
http://www.apple2.org.za/mirrors/ground.icaen.uiowa.edu/useful.stuff/Disks/PDShrinkIts.dsk
That should get you the tools to get working on $00 files.over on the GS.
