I haven't owned my 12" Powerbook for long, but I did think the hinges felt a little loose compared to my girlfriend's same model. Definitely not as tight as my MacBook Pro's hinges.
My MB Pro's hinges are definitely looser than the were when I bought it.
They definitely loosen up with age. That said, out of my stable of Al's the only one with *really* loose hinges is the junker/parts mule, which faceplanted from several feet up. (Didn't break the display, but did a number on the rest of the case.) It's positively "wobbly", which implies at least something in the hinges is susceptible to damage from overstressing.
I suspect how quickly they get loose has some relation to how violently the lid gets opened on a regular basis. If you're the type to just whip the thing open it's going to show quicker.

I've had 4 MacBook Pros and so far all of them have had their hinges come loose, but not the hinge itself, just the screws. So I opened it up and tightened the screws and they've all been fine ever since. One of them is also the very first model MacBook pro.
My MB Pro is also a first generation. How hard is it to get to the screws? If its not too difficult I might give it a go.
Just take off the top case(part with keyboard and trackpad in it) and you can get to all four screws. There's two in each hinge, torx 8 IIRC.
Dang, you've had 4 already? I feel left out being only on my 2nd
just a screw adjustment to tighten them back up? well that's simple. i'll do it when i swap my hard drive. this computer still has the squealing one in it. i have an external one to back up to, and i will get to that and ordering another drive.
