I just got my Apple IIc from the mail and I tried playing choplifter with the joystick and I have to press the apple buttons to shoot and everything. I can use the joystick to move the helicopter but I can't shoot or move the helicopter left, right, or centered. How do I use the joystick for the complete game?

It sounds like the joystick buttons need cleaning. You will need electrical contact cleaner and tools to take your joystick apart. Pretty straight forward, but if you have the apple joystick, be careful of the little springs between the orange buttons and the actual mechanical switch. They tend to fly out when disassembled. Once you have access to the actual switch mechanism, douse it with contact cleaner and work it in. Press the switches until your fingers hurt. Let it dry completely before checking it out. You can probably test it without reassembling if you're careful. If there are no electrical breaks in the wires, this should fix it.
