ok, so i am all about scsi and can configure and tell you everything you need to know about scsi, but when it comes to ide, i am dead in the water.
i have a 5500/225 with, you guessed it, ide. i want to upgrade and heve heard that i can just get any ide, but there are all the ata33, 66 100 133 and so on.
what do i need to know, because i want this to have a drive larger than 9 gigs. i am looking to turn this into a storge unit and printstation.
any info would be appreciated.
peace and love
and ANY ide hardrive i throw in that works, although i'm pretty shure it has the cube's limitation of not recognising anything over 128gb, so just buy a seagate 7200.7 120gb, there almost silent, cheap($99 or less) and you can get them for even cheaper in an 80gb variety
On eBay, Maxtor and Western Digital 80 GB hard drives sell for approximatly 30-40 dollars. I would go for one of those if you are looking for storage. My advice, do not invest in a 120 gig drive as it far exceeds the power and value of the 5500. With the 100 bucks you would spend on a 120 gig or the like you could easily purchase an all-in-one G3 or a revision A iMac fully loaded INCLUDING shipping costs.
I had similar setup PowerMac used with NetBSD PPC to serve files remotely and it worked fine with about 40 dollars of invested upgrades.... These three upgrades you want are:
1] cheap yet large hard drive (40 or 80 GB)
2] fast NIC card (only about 10 bucks, fits in the PCI slot)
3] RAM (2 64 MB sticks of EDO RAM are cheap on eBay, the 5500 can use any type of FPM or EDO RAM, just look up "64 MB EDO")
Run OS9, it supports large drives and networking in the most efficient manner.
thanks guys. thats what i needed to hear.
peace and love
