Classic RPG Wasteland and Apple IIgs

I have a newer release version of Wasteland and it states for the "*IIgs (*in IIe emulation mode:64K)". I use to love this game so I thought I'd give it a go on my resurected GS. When I boot it I get the sound, but no graphics...just a blank screen.

To make sure the disk had not corrupted from sitting in the box for so many years I booted Wasteland on my old IIc to check it and it worked fine. I then tried it on the GS with the speed slowed down...but same results as before sound but no graphics. This is driving me nuts since I do remember playing this game on the GS before it went into storage.

Am I overlooking something simple? I have long since misplaced my manual for the GS so I am not even sure if I am in the IIe:64k emulation mode or what that is?

IIe emulation mode. . .

happens automatically any time you put a program in the GS that is designed to run on the IIe. Why you're having trouble getting it to run I'm not sure. I'll check the copy of Wasteland that I downloaded (I need to use ADTPro to transfer it to a disk) and see if it runs on my GS. Which ROM version is your GS? I'm not sure if that matters or not but just curious.

Thanks...My ROM is version 01. I have an old storage box with 15 apple II and IIgs programs that survived the moves we made and I did not foolishly give away. So far the only ones that have not worked is Wasteland and Bank Street Writer Plus (the old 5.25 boot disk has one to many bad sectors). I did verify my Wasteland boot disk and no errors were reported.

Wasteland

I transferred the DSK image of Wasteland to my IIGS and then booted it. Unfortunately I ended up with a screenful of 2's. So I fired up my emulator on my Mac Mini and booted Wasteland there. It booted and showed a crack screen intro. Not sure why that comes across in an unbootable form. Will keep working on it and let you know.

Still no luck

I am not going to rule out the ROM. I understand that a small handful of programs that run find under ROM 01 have a problem with ROM 03. Just wonder if Wasteland was tested under ROM 00 and has a problem with ROM 01.....yeah I know, I am grasping at straws Smile

Not sure

David,
Not sure where he got the dsk.image hopefully he will log on and let you know. I am just killing time this evening, while my wife is out of town, so I will look around for an online source. It is just driving me nuts because I am sure I remember this game running on my original GS.....not sure if it was under ROM 00 or 01 which I upgraded to before I stored it away.

The uploading and downloading of apple files is going to be a future topic for me...

Here's where I got the images

At Asimov, Wasteland is in it's own folder in the RPG folder in the Games folder in the Images folder. At least those are DSK images. Every other copy I found online was a nib image.

I hope you have better success than I did David.

Try ADT

I have found some instances where ADT did a better job of building real disks than ADTPro. This was for lightly copy protected 5-1/4" disks of games. I haven't had time to test this theory yet, but you might try the ADT client on the Apple II end when transferring these images. You can still use the ADTPro server to serve it.

Wasteland DSK image transfer

David,

Here's something curious. I just booted Wasteland on a friends Apple IIc and had no problem getting it up and running. That is the same disk that gave me a screen full of 2 on my ROM 1 GS. Any ideas what's going on, since Jim said the documentation says it will run on the GS?

Same results...

Dean,
You duplicated my results to the tee! Works find on a IIc/IIe and not on a IIgs. It is not a problem with the disk images you are using since the same is happening to me on the original boot disk.

I can't imagine that EA would state in the docs and on the disk label that it will run on the IIgs without having verified it first.....or maybe not Smile

ROM 1 or ROM 3 emulator same results

Jim,

I hate to say it but I think EA lied about being able to run Wasteland on the GS. I tried booting Wasteland using Sweet 16, another GS emulator I use once in a while besides KEGS MAC. It didn't matter whether it booted as a ROM 1 or ROM 3 I ended up with a screen full of 2's each time.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings.

Oh Well...

Thanks for looking into this, but I agree that it doesn't look like it will run regardless of what EA says. Guess I'll have to find a apple color monitor, on ebay, for my IIc to enjoy this old classic.

Use IIe emulation mode?

The Wasteland packaging states the game works on a IIgs "in IIe emulation mode." Perhaps the 65816 isn't actually switching into emulation mode for some reason? I believe you can switch a IIgs into emulation mode with control-R in the Monitor (or perhaps settings in the control panel--I'm a IIe guy, so I'm unfamiliar with GS/OS). Just a guess; Google "IIgs emulation mode" for more details.

1Mhz podcast

Carrington,

Just a quick question. When can we expect another 1Mhz podcast? I really enjoy listening to your reviews and commentary.

1Mhz podcast

I'll be recording it this weekend, and hopefully getting back into regular episodes. I've moved since my last show, and it took ages to set up my podcasting gear in my new digs (plus, you know ... life).

The show is the reason I found myself here on this board, actually: looking for info about Wasteland, which I've been playing (*VERY* happily) for the couple of weeks. I'd started the game months ago but then got distracted; this time I'm hoping to play all the way through. It's such a fantastic game.

I'm lucky to have snagged a copy of the rare Wasteland Survival Guide, which I believe only shipped with the original issue of the Apple II version of the game. It's an amazing quasi-hint book that reads more like a story (with maps). I'm scanning it to post along with my show notes.

Sounds good. Hope you like your new place. I'll be interested in seeing the copy of the quasi-hint book you post, as I've also got an Apple IIc and plan on playing Wasteland on it.

I also enjoyed the review you did of Portal quite a while back. I managed to snag a copy of that through eBay, complete in the original box.

If you get a screen full of 2's, Try turning on the Alternate Display Mode in the GS Control Panel. It seems there are a few IIe screenmodes that are emulated on the GS (like the second page of lores graphics).

[edit] Shoulda checked the dates. Looks like I'm a year behind the times Sad

Unfortunately I've got a ROM 1 GS and Alternate Display Mode doesn't work the way it's supposed to. I do have ROM 3 motherboard and I keep contemplating doing brain surgery on my GS to replace the motherboard. At this point I'm still undecided.
