Have you tried http://www.t-mobile.com/coverage/ ? Overall, it's been pretty accurate for me.
Also, you'll definitely want to try to play with a G1 before you buy. Everything I've seen suggests the hardware is somewhat lacking. (Personally, I think the fact you need to use an adapter just to plug headphones into the thing is stupid.)
The coverage map looks hopeful, but sufficiently borderline that I'm not signing a contract without checking first.
