very weird emac problem

i have a very weird problem w/ my emac. it is 1GHZ w/ 512mb of ram. it reports itself to have a superdrive in system profiler, but it will not read the dvds i put in it. it reads my cds just fine however. any suggestions? also would i be able to clone my macbook's hard-drive onto the emac and make it run leopard. i know the emac can take leopard, but is the stuff on my macbook universal or not. thanks for your help.

Hmm.

What sort of DVDs are you trying to get it to read?

As for the cloning, I don't believe that will work. Your Macbook is running x86 (Intel) Leopard while your eMac needs the PowerPC version. I don't think the system itself is universal. Mind you, I would wait for a response from someone who knows for sure.

*Which* Tiger DVD?

A retail version (black disc with a big grey X on it)?

Or the grey version that came with your MacBook?

If it's the one that came with your MacBook, it's the wrong partition table (GUID instead of Apple Partition Map), so it won't boot a PPC like your eMac. Not to mention it'll be Intel-native code only, so you wouldn't be able to install even if it would boot.

this is a ppc tiger disk

i used this disk to install tiger on my other emac. it works fine. my macbook came w/ leopard. i got the cloned disk to boot. first restart the emac in target disk mode then go to disk utility and partition the disk as Apple Partition Map. then use CCC4 to clone the macbook's hard drive. it works great.

Hmm...

Go to 'System Profiler' and click on 'Disc Burning'. Lets see if it is a Superdrive.

bad drive, toss

The drive is almost certainly kaput. DVDs and CDs use different lasers to read, so it's common for one type to work while the other does not.

A new DL superdrive costs all of . . . what, $25 or so? Toss the old drive and replace with a new one.

Probably a bit more for a (laptop style) DL superdrive to fit an iMac G5.

One quick example

besides the fact it is an emac...

... it uses a standard desktop dvd drive. the only pain is that i will need to take it apart to change them... a'well, it'll just have to wait

I consulted MacTracker for this one

All 1GHz eMacs (this speed was available in three different series) used the AirPort Extreme card.

Is this possible?

Let me get this straight. You're saying you started up your eMac in target disk mode via firewire to your Macbook so that it turned up on your Macbook's desktop, and then reformatted the eMac hard drive with the Macbook Leopard's Disk Utility, and then opened CCC4 on your Macbook and cloned the Macbook's hard drive onto the eMac hard drive and now your eMac boots up from its hard drive into that cloned Leopard with no problems?

Ok, I gave it a try myself and made a backup copy of my Intel Mini's Leopard onto a PATA drive and then put the drive in one of my Quicksilvers (867Mhz) and it works. Well, that's surprising, but I had a clue it might work when I saw that I could still install OS9 drivers during the formatting. It's VERY sluggish, though, in the Quicksilver. I tried to repair permissions and it was taking forever so I cancelled that. I opened garage band but it got stuck somewhere and I had to force quit. I tried a few other simple apps that worked. So it works but it's definitely not problem free--at least, not in my Quicksilver--and I don't think I want to find out where all the other problems are going to crop up.

Of course, this was just an experiment. I'm sure using a cloned copy as the permanent system for another machine is a violation of the EULA and we don't do that.

Oh, and, the latest version of CCC I've found is 3.2, so "CCC4" is a mistake, right?
