Getting files from the Internet onto TAM (20th Anniv. Mac)

Hello all:

As confessed in my earlier post on the TAM, I was originally an Apple II guy and am just learning the nuances of working with classic Mac OS's. Anyway, what is the best way, or any viable way, to get a file downloaded from the internet, originally in .SIT stuffit expander format, off of my Mac Mini with OS X 10.6.4 and onto a floppy disk that I can load onto my classic TAM? I have a USB 1.44 floppy hooked up to my Mac Mini. I just want an image loaded onto the floppy that my TAM will recognize to install the software (various old mid 1990's games mostly).

I have figured out how to do these sorts of things on my Apple IIgs with Uthercard, but am baffled for the Mac. Should be easier right?

Thanks,
Vapor

Format the floppy with TAM

Format the floppy with the TAM, then put it in the USB-drive and when the Mac Mini recognizes the floppy, just drag & drop whatever you like on it. OS X 10.6.4 shouldn't have problems with images.
Alternatively you could use a crossover ethernetcable, initiating the connection from the TAM side.
CDs must be formated as "Mac OS" (not Extended) for systems below OS 8.

I tried formatting the floppy

I tried formatting the floppy in the TAM but the Mini wouldn't recognize the disk then. I'll give it a try again. Thanks.

I have burn many disks in 10.4 using toast for my Performa 475 running 7.6.1 without a hitch.

Thanks. So do you just instal

Thanks. So do you just install Toast on the Mac Mini and then use it to create floppy images on the attached USB floppy, and then take that floppy over to the TAM? Or are you talking about burning CDs? I want to use floppies for now as I will be transferring a few files over time and don't want to keep burning CDs without filling them up (the TAM won't read re-writable CDs)

I am talking about making a burned CD. use a CD-R not a RW, it might not be the best choice but if you want programs on your TAM then what other choice have you (if your floppy drive is not working or you cant get the ethernet working. just make a burned disk only when you think you would make a full disk.

As for the floppy drive in 10.6 i do not know, as i haven't used a floppy drive in a newer OS, because i have never gotten a usb floppy drive to work in OS X.

all that i know of a floppy drive in OS X is they do not like to work, and only like reading certain formats when they do, like a ms-dos formatted disk vs other formats and even then they do not like to work.

You might have better luck booting into windows and using the drive that way then within OS X.

since almost every Mac (before the iMac) has a superdrive in it it can format and read IBM/MS-DOS formatted disks (it should give you a drop down on what format to choose to format the disk as, a list of 3 choices).

if none of them work then something is either wrong with the drive in your TAM or your USB drive or its drivers.

Thanks. I'm going to upgrade

Thanks. I'm going to upgrade it to OS 8 or 9 and see if I can't get the Ethernet working on my network. That may be the easiest solution.

Thanks,
Matt
