Just got ahold of a very nice black Takky, and am weighing the option of adding a G3 card and perhaps ethernet to it. But I want to KISS (keep it simple...)
So I have 3 quick ?'s for anyone with personal experience:
(1) Has anyone here successfully run a G3-L2 card in a Takky based on a 5500 or 6500 mobo, WITHOUT a 3.3V regulator or 2nd PSU? (My CC in question has no 2nd PSU and appears not to have a 3.3V regulator, and runs fine with the stock 250MHz 603e and a firewire PCI card.)
(2) Has anyone here ever obtained a G3-L2 card that was low enough to fit under the CC's floppy drive without having to hack up the underside of the floppy's plastic carrier/shelf?
(3) Has anyone on these forums ever managed to find a source for the rare Comm Slot II ethernet card that's only 40mm high (i.e. no higher than the metal shielding around the ethernet port), and which therefore can fit in a Takky CC without relocating the hard drive?
TIA,
Matt
(1) What you can put in a Takky without the 3.3v regulator or 2nd PSU seems to vary from one CC to another. In my case, after MONTHS of fiddling around with it and wondering why it lost video sometimes and not others, I finally figured out what combination of features my Takky would tolerate, and it the answer turned out to be - not much. Maybe yours will tolerate more, but I've never seen anyone here claim they could get a G3-L2 card working.
(2) As far as I know the G4-L2 cards are limited to one product line from Sonnet, so they're all really the same size. So get out the Dremel tool.
I don't know anything about (3).
Wow, it must be really sleepy around here if it took a week for you to get a response.

Thanks Bruce, for the responses.
On (1), yeah, that's what I figured.
On (2), I was thinking of the Vimage cards. They're supposed to be smaller than the Sonnets, "barely bigger than an actual L2 cache DIMM" according to some reviews.
On (3), there's a guy in Japan with a CC site who has a low-profile CSII enet card. But I've never heard of one being found in the US.

Been away on holiday for ten days. . .
I've never heard of a G3 upgrade working without the 3.3v supply being added.
Sonnets were so much more numerous than the Vimage - hence the lack of communal experience on that one.
My recollection is/was that a taller CSII card needed some plastic hacking, and the insertion of the l/b into the chassis before adding the case bucket, but didn't necessarily require a HD relocation. But I sold my Takky a couple of years ago, and my memory isn't what it was.
