I am finally getting around to putting together my Mac 128K->512K upgrade (not 512Ke I think) with a HD20. It boots to a flashing "Disk ?" so I am not expecting big problems. I will probably use my Floppy EMU SD card as the primary source of software since it seems complete enough for now, but I'm also famaliar with Macintosh Garden. I also have Basilisk II running if I want to prep there also. I know I will need a 400K book floppy with HD20 Init to boot and then enable the HD20. I have plenty of DD 3.5" disks. My college roomate ran a Red Ryder BBS on one in 1985, but that was a long time ago and I don't remember many details about the config. Any tips on best OS etc to save me from chasing bad ideas to discover the right solutions. I want to create a typical 512K setup (late 1985- early 1986) with MacPaint, MacWrite and a few games. Any tips to get started and avoid fruitless paths?

I wish you luck with your project, not having any Macs that old myself. But from the information I was able to gather, it seems like you could use one of the System 4.x versions with a few patches applied, which are described on the System 4 page on Macintosh Garden, and the corresponding page on MacGUI.
System 4 will be a little more traditional and closer to the original Mac experience compared to running System 6.
Going in the other direction, System 3 has more limitations, with incomplete support for hard disks and networking possibly being a problem.
