iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad etc as a cassette replacement?

I recently saw the video from Panic who hooked up an iPad to run a cassette program on their //e, and it got me interested in trying it with my //e with either my ipod touch or iphone, am I right in thinking that my best bet for the cables is to get 2 mono 1/8"(3.5mm) jack to jack cables and a mono 1/8" splitter? and what about converting downloading programs? some places ive found offer wav files which obviously itunes doesn't like, is running them through a mp3 conversion or an aiff conversion an option? thanks for any help.

You don't really need the splitter part. This is a one-way operation... unless you are planning to save audio data on your iPad. I'm sure there's an app for that. Wink

This is the place for the most comprehensive set of cassette software:

You'll need to convert them from wav to aiff. Avoid mp3, as that will clip out data that the Apple II specifically is looking for.

ok so no go on that that, I am doing right arent? I play the file on my ipod, then press return in applesoft having typed in LOAD. i have tried the volume at 50, 75 and 100% and the apple just sits there even after the file has finished playing on the ipod. im using a 3.5mm to 3.5mm stereo cable from the ipod to the apple, following your instructions on the adtpro pages for which is the cassette in on the apple (the cassette image with the confusing arrow pointing down)? I used itunes to convert the wav to aif.

The cable should work fine. You want to connect to cassette in - the right side (as you face the rear of the Apple), with the image of the arrow pointing down/away from the cassette. So this all sounds like it should work.

What sound file are you trying to load, exactly? Some aren't BASIC code and can't just be LOADed. Some may require more parameters to get loaded.

Since the Apple II isn't completing the read, I suspect that volume isn't high enough.

Actual mono cables work slightly better then stereo cables. Volume probably has to be maxed out - make sure that you iPad settings aren't preventing max volume.

I have an Apple command line format to AIFF converter program. This was designed for Apple 1, so it doesn't calculate and send a checksum. Otherwise the format is the same as Apple II. The source is provided, so feel free to add the checksum bytes at the end and let me know how it works for you.

Cameron Cooper has come up with an IOS App for downloading sound files to an Apple 1. I don't think it would take much to modify for Apple II.

bar a few tapes (breakout mainly) all casstte files ive found have worked. Mike id still like to know how to add the checksum you talked about and try converting to aiff to use a tapedeck style app on the iphone figured it would look kinda cool and a bit sad but ya know.

On my web site www.apple1notes.com there is application information on saving cassette data to the iPod (or iPad or iPhone) for the Apple 1, this also applies to the Apple II cassette interface.

Re: iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad etc as a cassette replacement?

@wsander thanks yeh i looked at that page, am I right in thinking that i would need for an apple II which has the cassette in and cassette out ports, a splitter such as this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3-5mm-Headphones-Adapter-Splitter-iPhone-3GS-3G-/140569537376?pt=UK_MobilePhones_MobilePhoneAccesories_MobilePhoneDataCables_JN&hash=item20ba98eb60#ht_2442wt_877

it looks to have the 4 conductor end for plugging into the iDevice (essentially identical to the IK multimedia iRig guitar interface) with then two 3.5mm cables going from the splitter into the apple II ports?

PS: AWESOME APPLE 1 setup! if only i had the cash to even get the Briel Replica 1 or the achatz A-One replicas.

I think the simplest would be a pair of 3.5mm male to RCA female mono adapters and then an appropriate RCA to 4 pin 3.5mm cable.

Re: iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad etc as a cassette replacement?

mmm seems like six to one half dozen really, and i think the splitter would end up being a few bob cheaper for me as i already have a stereo 3.5mm that ive been using which works. I may try that splitter, if it doesn't then hey i still have a splitter which i could do with anyway. Cheers for the help.

Apple's spec for the cassette data.

http://support.apple.com/kb/TA40730

For assembly language programs, you just need to add the checksum at the end of my program - This is a bitwise Exclusive or of all the preceding bytes.

You can load Apple 1 sound files into an Apple II, but the load will not complete, since the checksum is not present. To check for a good load, after playing the file, type reset and see if the last couple bytes were loaded correctly.

Mike W.
