eMate Power Supply

I am about to buy a Newton eMate 300, but it doesn't come with a power supply. I got the hint somewhere that the apple quicktake 7.5v power supply would work with it. Is that true? It supplies 15w vs 9w, other than that it looks the same. I have also read horror stories of frying Newts with 3rd party adapters...

Thanks!

It's always best to use a real Newton adaptor if you can.

Check the Newton FAQ.

Re: eMate Power Supply

That makes sense, thanks for the links. It seems the adaptor is doing the charging of the batteries, not the unit. Interesting. I ended up buying one with a supply, thank you for saving my emate! Wink

I had another question, if I buy a compact flash PC card reader, does it matter what type as long as it's type I/II compatible? What is the maximum card size?

Thanks!

Re: eMate Power Supply

If it's a PCMCIA reader it'll be fine. Avoid anything which says CardBus, as the Newton doesn't know what that is.

There isn't a limit on card size as far as I can tell (I've used an 8GB card in my 2100), but the Newton OS can slow down a bit if you've got a lot of stuff on your card. Many people partition big CF cards and have one partition automount, then mount the second if they need to.

The other things to consider are speed and power usage. I'd avoid IBM/Hitachi Microdrives for that reason.

You'll need the CF card drivers, too, which you can get from here.

In the eMate, you can also use type III cards, but there aren't many of those kicking around any more.
