Does the Apple 1 do anything with the <Ctrl> key

I am still planning my build (which should start on the main board this weekend), but am going to build a Keyboard encoder card for a II plus keyboard to interface with the Apple 1. I am going to use Vince Briel's Microcontroller from the SuperEncoder. In my decision I know others have used the "Repeat" key for clear screen. I was thinking of using the key instead as suggested by Vince to keep the repeat key. Before I go down tearing apart schematics to see if this is even possible should I bother. Will I need the key?

Thanks,
Corey

That depends on the software being run. Maybe if we ported something like Emacs to the Apple1, the control characters might come in handy.

This image shows a keyboard with a ctrl key. For example, Ctrl-G is the Bell character. It looks like it has extra keys for CLR SCREEN and RESET.

I think that the Clear Screen key should be it's own key for an Apple 1.

Well that answers that... I will do the repeat key unless I can "hack up" the keyboard's actual PCB board to make the "left-arrow" clear screen.

Rather than hack up your keyboard, instead add a separate push button for Clear Screen?

Re: Does the Apple 1 do anything with the <Ctrl> key

I started dissembling my keyboard I received in the mail yesterday. All the screws and support brackets have rust on them, but every key moves and all the caps are there. After taking the key caps off and removing the screws (after soaking in WD-40) I came up with an idea on the clear screen...

THE POWER INDICATOR.... I will use the "right arrow" switch relocated to where the power indicator is....

I can simple break the trace that goes to ground and run a wire back for the reset signal. Then I will tie it to pin 4 on the 16 pin dip and with a cable as described on Wendell Sanders site I should be good.

Most keyboards I have seen before the apple II do not even have a power indicator.... and my keyboard does say Datanetics right on it Wink

Well new development... I have a bunch of dead keys switches... So I may not be using this keyboard after all unless I can find replacements or someone knows how to fix the broken keys switches.
